Blow- Based on a True Story

Being a HUGE Johnny Depp fan, I would rank this #1 on my "all time" favorite movies. George Jung (Johnny Depp) is the son of a struggling small business owner (Ray Liota). Watching his family struggle to make ends meet and failing, George vows never to have to struggle to make ends meat. As soon as he can he moves to California, and known as "Boston George" he starts his own marijuana pushing operation, with his partner Derek Foreal (Paul Reubens), in which he finds both success and eventually imprisonment. He skips out on bail but is later caught, in unfortunate circumstances. In prison, his cellmate introduces him to a whole new market, cocaine. Upon his release, George Jung quickly becomes instrumental in establishing the exploding 1970's US market for cocaine. He claimed he handled about 85% of the supply between the countries of Columbia and America. He marries a beautiful and well connected Colombian woman (Penelope Cruz). However, for all the fabulous wealth and power he gained, the true costs of his dangerously treacherous occupation catch up with him in ways from which he would never recover. Directed by Ted Demme.

Pulp Fiction

This one of my "all time" favorite movies. I have watched it numerous times and have never gotten tired of it. Not to mention the smoking soundtrack. Outlandish characters Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta) are two hard ass hit men out to retrieve a mysterious suitcase stolen from their employer by a bunch of punk kids Mob boss Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) wants his briefcase returned at any cost. Meanwhile, Wallace has asked Vincent to take his wife Mia (Uma Thurman) out while Wallace will be out of town. Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) is an aging boxer who is paid by Wallace to throw his next fight, but will he do it? The lives of these seemingly unrelated and unique people are woven together pulling together a series of funny, completley bizarre and seemingly uncalled-for incidents. Directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Seven Pounds

Wow, what a movie. The first time I watched it I was intrigued, the second time I watched it I was absolutely hooked. Staring Will Smith, Rosario Dawson, and Woody Harrelson. It started out a bit confusing, but starts to show the story pretty quick. Ben (played by Will Smith) destroyed his life as he knew in seven seconds. Now he is on a mission to help seven strangers for reason not revealed at the beginning of the movie. On his journey, he encounters a woman (Rosario Dawson) who will change his life forever. It's dramatic, very well written, and extremely emotional. I highly recommend this movie for any Will Smith fans, or fans of great movies. Directed by Gabriele Muccino.

The Crow

This is another must see. I definitely rank it up there in the Top 10 of my "all time favorites". On October 30, Devil's Night in Seattle, responding to a call, Sergeant Albrecht (Ernie Hudson) is at the scene of a crime where Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas) has been brutally beaten and raped, and her fiance, local musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) died on the street outside, having been stabbed, shot, and thrown out of the window. The couple were to be married the next day. As he leaves for the hospital with Shelly, Albrecht encounters a young girl, Sarah (Rochelle Davis), who says that she is their friend, that they take care of her. Albrecht tells her that Shelly is dying. One year later, soon after Sarah places roses on Shelly's grave, a crow taps on the headstone of Eric Draven; Eric awakens from death and climbs frantically out of his grave, trembling and wracked with convulsions and confusion. Eric goes to his old apartment and finds it derelict. He has quite visual memories of the murders and relives the pain of that fateful night, and remembering those responsible were T-Bird and his gang: Tin Tin, Funboy and Skank. Meanwhile, the gang is out setting their traditional Devil's Night fires. Eric almost immediately discovers any wounds he receives heal instantly, and that he, being dead, is now immune to physical harm. He replaces his burial clothes with dark, imposing attire, and paints his face, decorating his face deathly white and his lips and eyes with black, scar-like slashes. Guided by the crow, he sets out to avenge his and Shelly's murders. Directed by Alex Proyas.

Side Note: Brandon Lee died at the age of 28 on the set of "The Crow". The film crew shot a scene in which it was decided to use a gun without consent from the weapons coordinator They handed the gun over, loaded with full power blanks and shot the scene, unaware a bullet head from an inert round had accidentally been lodged in the barrel. Even though the gun was pointed away from Lee, the force from the blank curved the flight of the bullet head and it shattered his spinal cord. He was pronounced dead at 1:04 pm the next day. His body was flown to Seattle to be buried beside his father in Lake View Cemetery.

Step Brothers

I must start by saying this movie is hilarious as a fan of both Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, I find it particularly amusing since these two actors work together like they are really brothers. Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell) and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) are both about 40 when Brennan's mom, Nancy, (Mary Steenburben) and Dale's dad, Robert Doback, (Richard Jenkins) meet and get married The sons still live with their respective parents, so when Nancy and Robert tie the knot, the "kids" must now share the same room. The step-brothers instantly despise one another and this threatens the household's peace and the parents' relationship. Dad lays down the law: both slackers have a week to find a job. Out of the job search and their love of music comes a pact that leads to friendship however there is more domestic disarray over the boys' sleepwalking habits. Hovering nearby are Brennan's successful brother, Derek, and his lonely wife, Alice: Derek, who has a long standing resentment of his brother Brennan, wants to help sell his step-father's house, the wife desperately wants Dale's attention, and the newlyweds want to retire and sail around the world. Can any harmony possibly come from the discord? Directed by adam McKay.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry

One of my favorite Madison Productions is this movie right here. It is hilarious. Not only that but it has a moral to the story, imagine that in todays world. Chuck Levine (Adam Sandler) and Larry Valentine (Kevin James) are two bad ass New York firefighters. They are best friends, maybe even closer than that, more like brothers. Larry is a widower, with two small Children. Meanwhile, Chuck is living any mans dream for a bachelors life. After an emergency fire response, Larry dares Chuck to eat a dead, smoldering rat for money, instead Larry falls from the 2nd story, where he was leaning over, all on a bet. Chuck manages to save him from breaking his neck. They are rushed to the hospital and have no severe injuries, thankfully. Larry is forced to make a drastic move to get his children to be the beneficiaries on his insurance, he is a fireman after all, and their mother passed a while ago. Larry calls in that one big time, for saving Chuck's life. What's a friend, a brother, a fellow firefighter to do? They try to manipulate the system by becoming "domestic partners", they foolishly think it will be easy, after all who will ever know, just forward the mail. They begin to get questioned by the beneficiaries department. An inspector comes out to question their partnership they begin to get into trouble. They hire a lawyer, Alex McDonough (Jessical Biel), she suggests making their partnership legal. So off they go, the two very heterosexual men go to Niagara Falls to now be pronounce husband and husband. They now have to move in together. The new couple's arrangement becomes a citywide issue, it goes from confidential to front-page news by a bizarre turn of events. After surviving their mandatory "honeymoon", pictures and all, they have to dodge threats of exposure. The well-intentioned, misconstrued now con men discover that sticking together in your time of need is what can turn a friendship into a family. Directed by Dennis Dugan.

Yes Man

For any Jim Carrey fans out there, this is his best by far, at least in my opinion. He is one of my favorite entertainers in the business today. The movie is about a man, Carl Allen (Jim Carrey) feeling a little down and out on his luck. He's going nowhere at his job, he's avoiding his best friend. Then he happens to run into an old friend, Nick (John Michael Higgins) at the bank where he work and Nick encourages him to visit a seminar that has changed Nick's life, "for the better". The seminar is focused on saying the word yes, to all lifes perils and odd requests. His first "yes test" is driving a homeless man to the forest, the homeless man uses his phone until it's dead, of course Carl had to say yes, the homeless guy asks for money, and again Carl says yes. He winds up stranded in the forest when his car runs out of gas. How convenient. He walk to the nearest gas station only to discover he has no more money. This is where Carl meets Allison (Zooey Deschanel) and thus begins a hilarious tale of a man with a "covenant" to say yes, to everything. As you would expect, everything Carl says yes to starts to backfire in the most brilliantly funny ways. I recommend this movie to anyone who wants a good laugh. Directed by Peyton Reed.

I had never heard of Depp until that Pirate movie. He is a good actor like some of those from the 40s and 50s.

My daughter is a huge fan of Johnny Depp, therefore I've watched alot of his movies, like the "brooding" actor, very reminiscent of the James Dean type.

Pulp Fiction is one of my all-time favorite movies, although I had to see it more than once to truly enjoy its comedic elements. (Had to acclimate to the violence first). The last 45 minutes of Pulp Fiction are as good as it gets. Thanks for your post, very good list.
