Moving and Relocation: Moving Basics
63Moving Basics
Moving is not only a complex task, but it can be hectic and stressful as well. Having the right information on hand is the best way to avoid problems, but there is so much information that you should know that it becomes just another hassle. For the benefit of those who simply cannot find their way through the masses of information and knowledge, a handy guide is truly a lifesaver. Here begins such a guide, one that will help any mover learn about stress and money saving tactics that can be put to use during any stage of a move. The goal is to enable those who are moving to reduce the stress involved in a move, save money while moving, and be empowered by knowledge to handle and cope with any issues that may arise throughout the duration of the relocation.
As any guide must, this too shall begin at the beginning. Knowing what relocation and moving is creates the very base to all things that are involved in a move. Moving, as defined by my personal experience, is the total shift of all one’s belongings from one dwelling to another. At times, this new place may exist only a few minutes away, or it could be a place that is in a totally other country. There are many different reasons that a person may move, and there are moving services to handle all kinds of moves. From the smaller personal moves to the large family relocations, certain things must be accomplished before the move can press on.
The very first step that anyone who is moving should take is the creation of a moving checklist. A checklist that outlines your move, as well as any actions that must be accomplished before the move is complete, is a very important tool for any type of relocation. Even small scale moves that require very little work should consider the creation of this moving checklist. This list will have a few different benefits depending on who you are and what is involved in your move. For those with small moves, it will enable you to see the broad picture and see, from start to finish, where you and all of your things are going.
For the larger movers, a moving checklist is a tool that can mean the difference between a good experience and a disaster. Larger scale moves are going to take lots of organization and the aid of many hands. This means that a map will be needed. This checklist acts as that map. It allows everyone involved to see what needs to be accomplished and what should be completed before the move is finished. The list should always include every little detail. Once drawn up, others can modify and add things that they think you have missed. Including costs, prices, and goals can also help you see where the most money and time is being spent, allowing you and those involved to possibly save you some time or money in a place you didn’t see before.
Once you have a map of all that is included in your move, you need to look at other aspects. There are many aspects of a move, but the most important is the moving method that you intend to use in the actual transfer of your things from one place to another. There are many different methods out there that you can use, but you should educate yourself on three of the most common. These methods include truck rentals for moving, portable storage containers, and professional moving companies. Each of these methods can be used for any type of move, so anyone who is moving should research time, cost, and accessibility of each method.
While later guides will delve deeper into these methods, we will cover the basics here. Truck rentals are perhaps the most common moving method in use today. Using truck rentals for moving will give you total control of your move. You will be in charge of packing, loading, and driving. These three main events encompass all aspects included in relocation, but can be quite time consuming. The benefits of a truck rental include the fact that you will be saving money and the idea that you will always treat your things the way that you want them treated. The biggest downfall to this method, however, is the fact that doing everything on your own can really take up a lot of your time.
Professional movers are an option open to people moving these days as well. Professional moving companies provide moving services of various types. Some companies provide a packing service that you can use if you do not want to pack your own things. They also load the moving truck and drive it to your destination. Once at your new home, the professionals unload and sometimes unpack your things as well. While most companies provide a basic load and drive service, you are welcome to hire them for any of these other moving services as well. The biggest benefit to using this method of moving is the fact that you will save a lot of time by not having to pack, load, or drive. The biggest downfall is the price tag that comes along with hiring someone else to do the work.
Somewhere in between these two methods is a newer method of moving known as portable storage. Portable storage is a new concept where a container is delivered to your home. You then pack your things and load them into the container. The company will pick the container up and drive it to your new home, where you are responsible for unloading it. This is a great mesh of the two other common moving methods, and many times it is just what someone is looking for. While you retain control of how your things are handled, you do not have to worry about driving your things in a moving truck rental. While the price associated with this method is not as much as professional movers, it is not as cheap as a truck rental .
Choosing a moving method is an important step that you need to take in your relocation process, but at the same time you should be creating a moving budget. A moving budget will help you make sure that there is enough financial resources available for your move, and it will keep you within certain boundaries when you are choosing moving services. Before choosing a company, you need to obtain moving quotes. These price estimates will allow you to choose a service and company that will give you the services you want and need without going outside of your budget. This information is vital to you and your move. Creating a budget is not hard, and like the moving checklist, it is a tool that every mover should use when they are preparing to move.
The semi-simultaneous completion of these things is the first step towards a successful and complete move. Each of these aspects is vital to relocation, and skipping one can result in some very large and real problems before the move is complete. Moving is never an easy thing to do, especially if you have lived in one place for quite a while. Thus, it is important to educate yourself with relocation and moving information before you get started. In the end, this information might just be the only thing that stands between yourself and total chaos.

Thanks for the advice! I've been comparing and contrasting quotes from moving companies and have found some potential costs I did not have budgeted. Having a comprehensive moving checklist really helps me keep organized and on target for my move.
