Backing Up Your Computer

If you have read my other hubs you know that I am big into food storage and emergency preparedness. The other night, I was putting together my emergency binder which includes copies of all my important documents, a list of items to grab if we have to evacuate quickly, etc. And I realized that if I was unable to bring my computer with me, I would lose A LOT of stuff that was really important to me and my family. Even just losing my family pictures alone would be devastating. And of course i don't have any sort of fancy backup plan on discs, but even if I did, if the house burnt down those discs would be ruined too.

I started to ponder on this problem and remembered that my brother and sister-in-law recently had a computer crash and had saved all of their files online with a company called Mozy. It seemed like it would be a great solution for my emergency dilemma and at the same time protect against just something as simple as a computer crash. So I immediately headed over to Mozy and began the signup process.

Uploading Your Files

This was the one part of the process I was slightly disappointed in. As I started my upload I was informed that it would take 11 days! Now granted I was backing up 22 gig of information, but that seems a little extreme. The one saving grace is that it did the upload in the background so it didn't affect my computer usage at all. I was also a little leary of turning my computer off and on during the initial upload as it seemed that sometimes I would have to reupload some parts after rebooting. Once the initial upload was done it was smooth sailing though, I scheduled it to backup once per day. What a relief to know that all of that information is safe, secure, and available in case I ever need it.

Sign Up Process

After checking out the Mozy website, I determined that the "free version" wouldn't be enough storage space for me (only 2 GB) so I went to the signup form for the unlimited storage version ($4.95 per month). This was such a simple signup process. I just filled in my email and password and selected the one year plan (got me a free month, YAY!). Then I just had to put in my payment info and I was ready to go. I immediately downloaded the Mozy software and started to upload my files. This entire signup process took all of about 10 minutes to accomplish. Definitely easier than trying to backup my data to multiple cds. The uploading process wasn't quite as simple, view the info on the right for details.

How Secure Is Your Data?

According to Mozy your online data is VERY safe. Here is some information from their website in regards to the security of your files:

  • 128-bit SSL encryption: The same technology used by banks secures your data during the backup process.
  • 448-bit Blowfish encryption: Secures your files while in storage, providing peace of mind that your private data is safe from hackers.

Testimonial From My Sister-In-Law

If you are interested in signing up for Mozy I would LOVE it if you would consider signing up through my blog. Simply visit our blog post containing Julie's Mozy Review and click the Mozy banner from there. Thanks for helping us out!!!

Retrieving Your Data

Luckily I haven't had to deal with retrieving my data from Mozy yet. However, I spoke with my sister-in-law Julie, and got the details from her on the process. If your computer crashes or is destryed, you simply log into Mozy and pull the files back off of their server onto your computer. They are organized on their server in the same manner they are organized on your home computer so it is easy to find everything. Julie said it just took her a few hours to pull down the critical files she needed for her business and her blogs. It was so simple and she was SO relieved to have them readily available. What a fantastic service and for only $4.95 to know you don't have to worry about losing your important documents and photos ever again! Watch Julie's testimonial video to the right and if you are sold on Mozy check out the signup box underneath.

Because I need to know!

How do you currently backup your computer files?

  • I don't use anything yet but I'm going to use MOZY!!!

Great I was looking for hubs on emergency preparedness, food storage, and 72 hour kits, and etc. I was thing of doing some myself, but you do a very nice job.

This is the first time I have seen Mozy, I will have to look at it.  You should look at my hub on, freeware, is it worth the money at http://hubpages.com/hub/Freeware-Actually-Free. It will tell how to get freeware to take an image of the drive, boot to a cd, and then if you couple that with Mozy, not only would you get back up, but the computer's operating system could be restored along with it.  Interesting combination. I may need to add that to my hub and then link over to yours.
