Mudpie Poetry I and II

I wrote both of these poems on the same day. Mudpie Poetry I is intended for adult poets (or wannabe poets).  I am also working on a book of poetry for children, so adapted Mudpie Poetry for a younger audience and call it Mudpie Poetry II. Enjoy! And happy eating -- I mean, reading!

.

Mmmmm mudpie

Worms in dirt dessert

Mudpie Poetry I

Sometimes

The purest poems

Are those unfettered

by convention

Rhyme schemes

And meters

Who needs ‘em?

Wisdom flows

Out the mouth of babes

Who know not

What they say rings true

Find that childlike voice

Tell her it’s ok

To play with her words!

Color it freeform

Outside the lines

Blurt it out

Edit free

You can clean up the grammar

The spelling and syntax

Later

…. Or not

If it doesn’t delight,

Poke it with your pen

Pat it with your palm

You’ll know

When it’s done

When it’s just exuberant enough

To flit off the page

Mudpie Poetry II

Go out in your yard

And dig up some words

Big, fat, juicy words

Toss ‘em together

And see how they sound

Do they rhyme?

Every time?

Now move ‘em around

Into lines

Short or long

It’s your poem

You can add

Or subtract

Ideas as you wish

Dip in your pen

Take a quick listen

If it doesn’t sound right

Mix till it’s silky

Pat it down smooth

You’ll know when it’s done

when the words

bake together

and slide off your tongue

Why thank you, dear RB. I am having a heckuva time with the photos. The poetry is easy. The photo capsules -- that's my fear! Thanks for visiting. MM

This is really cool, I love how you associate a poem with an actual mudpie. Plus those desserts look yummy and heart stopping.

Instead of Mudpie Poetry, I would have went with Stir-Fry Poetry :P Oh well, different strokes for different folks, right? LOL

This is awesome, MM. I believe that I had some of the best teachers a guy could have growing up. I was always met with encouragement and given autonomy to write to my heart's content. I wrote hundreds of poems between middle school and college and for the life of me, I don't know where many of them are :( Oh well, they weren't that great anyway...I did sell one in 7th grade for $5 however!

Welcome all to my sandbox! Everyone gets a watering can and we'll all make mudpies. Doesn't that sound fun?

Thanks for the encouragement on my book. Will deff let HP know when (more like "if") it gets published.

Dohn -- so why don't you write stir fry poetry?

I'm really blown away at the comments. Hub Pages rocks with the coolest writers on the planet! Hey -- that may become another poem... stay tuned!

I can't even rhyme with a tree.

So I will quit now,

Cause I don't know how!

Nice peotry MM. LIke I say, I am not a poetry nut. But I do like some Poe, more for the story line.

Keep on hubbing!

Dear MM, I too enjoyed how you used a tangable item (obviously mud) and made a poem; a poem where you can't go wrong and if you do, you start over. I see a third element in this beautiful poem - or I should say, it said to me "a recipe for life -words one could live by." Thank you. I enjoyed it very much.

Hey Sumon6 -- So where's your hub about Poe's writing then? LOL. Glad to have another friend of the dark one here on HP.

Jiberish -- Great to see you as always. Believe it or not, these poems were NOT inspired by any mud slinging on the Forums -:). Cheers! Mm

Dear Mighty Mom, I came across this Hub thing as I'll call it because I don't know enough about it but knew enough that I wanted to be involved. I've been writing poetry since the winter of my 11th or 12th birthday. Was an English Major at the University of New Hampshire - then got married, had two girls, which started me back writing short stories as they were my muses. Stuff that was published in our local paper in up state NY when we lived there 8 years ago. I now am in Ohio and my 19 year old is a freshman at Akron University and the 15 year old is in 10th grade. But we have a horse farm and for 8 years I raised alpacas and had many articles published in farming magazines, Alpaca News Today, and I'm also a photographer. Also an avid reader which I truely believe the more you read the better you write. AND YES LIFE IS MESSY! And in your poem it was so refreshing to be reminded that noone ever said we couldn't start over. I started my profile around 11 pm or after and I'm going to finish and ad some of my poems. Thanks for responding to my comment on your poem. I love it

When I was five I did taste a mud pie, but immediately spit it out. I was pretty adventurous as a child though, and I also sampled cat and dog food. Kids can definitely drive their parents crazy at that age I am sure. Playing in the mud is so much fun, but I did slip back wards running through a mud puddle and I ended up fracturing my arm. Do not run through the mud kids :). Lovely poems on the subject Mighty Mom.
