After realizing the abundance of mullets that can found around the world today, it's hard to believe that there was once a time when the long-haired locks of awesomeness weren't around. But, the late 1960s and early 1970s there were no mullets to be found and it took the somewhat strange formation of David Bowie's alter ego and alien Ziggy Stardust to really create the buzz that eventually pushed the mullet into the mainstream. It didn't take other popular celebrities much time to carry on the mullet torch through the 1970s, with such stars such as Florence Henderson, the mother of The Brady Bunch, showing that mullets were more than just a thing for the guys.

The mullet really seemed to pick up some major steam as it made the leap from the experimental in the 1970s to the mainstream in the 1980s and early 1990s. Not only were more people now rocking a mullet, but they were wearing them bigger and prouder than ever before. Around this same there there was also an incredible adoption of the mullet among celebrities of all types including actors such as John Stamos, Richard Dean Anderson, Mel Gibson, Patrick Swayze, Hulk Hogan and musicians such as Michael Bolton, Phil Collins and of course probably the most mullet-famous of them all, Billy Ray Cyrus. The super hot hair trend even made its way into the world of cartoons with He-Man's blonde locks considered to be a legitimate version of a mullet. This indeed was a highpoint for the mullet as the growth of the alternative haircut among men and women both young and old was simply off the charts and would keep the momentum for mullets moving well into the year 2000 and beyond.

Even though the mullet's heyday was in the 1980s and early 1990s there are currently still plenty of people who still call the haircut their own. However, as opposed the the celebrity-fueled and mainstream popularity that it once had, a mullet is now thought of as something funny, humorous and a haircut that no one ever takes seriously. If you currently had a mullet you might be subjected to teasing, unwanted pictures being taken of you and an overall negative social stigma making it extremely difficult to live an ordinary, everyday life.

There have also been many stereotypes created around the type of person who would have a mullet. Some of these stereotypes include:

• Their beer of choice is Budweiser with Miller High Life and Natural Light being a close second and third
• They wear trucker hats with sayings on them that have something to do with 'Whooping Ass'
• They enjoy smoking Marlboro cigarettes
• Their music of choice is 1990s hair band-style rock
• They either wear a 'wife beater' type of tank top, a shirt from their favorite hair band or go completely shirtless
• They have a deep love for their pickup trucks, which is also their transportation of choice

With this recent move to a more laughable spot in pop culture, mullets have been seen less and less on the street and more and more inside of local costume shops. It's even gotten to the point where a mullet wig has now become a fun and crazy way to spice up a night on the town or to add a little something over the top to your next outfit on Halloween.

As the mullet is seen more and more as something ridiculous to society the demand for these types of mullet wigs and other mullet-related entertainment has been growing at an incredible rate.This demand has resulted in several websites dedicated specifically to mullet wigs, t-shirts, videos and anything else that you can think of. Even though most people would never think of getting a mullet haircut themselves, many still feel the need to view them online or to wear one themselves as a way to have a little fun. So, as it stands now, it seems as though the mullet isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so whether you want to style one, buy one or just look at one, there seems to be plenty of mullets to go around for everyone.
