Why should we take multivitamins?

There are lots of studies made to substantiate the importance of multivitamins in our bodies. The most recent national survey suggests that the diets of many women are short of folate, calcium, iron and zinc.

Many researches has also stated 80 percent of children are not eating the recommended daily minimum (RDA) of five servings of fruits and vegetables. Only one-third eat the recommended daily minimum of whole grain bread and cereals that our body needs.

Although that we will religiously follow the food guide to healthy eating, we still may want to consider taking multivitamin.

The reasons are threefold:

  • Number One, some vitamins have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and certain age-related illnesses.
  • Number Two, it’s not always easy to meet the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of some nutrients with food alone.
  • Number Three, over time our bodies become less effective at absorbing some nutrients.

Multivitamins, minerals and trace elements are abundant in different fruits and vegetables.  These foods are rich with trace minerals, B vitamins, vitamin C and antioxidants.

However, studies show that a diet low in whole grains is also likely to be short on minerals and B vitamins.

We must eat a balance diet  to have all of these important nutrients and achieve a healthy life.
