Musical Interlude

“Music is what feelings sound like.” [Anon] And the world is full of music! The wonder of it is that each form of music has it’s own beauty. From Country to Classical, they are all wonderful.

It is my own personal opinion that music is created to be enjoyed. Listening to beautiful music with someone special, on a cool crisp November evening, lights down low, with brandy and snuggles to warm you, it just doesn’t get much better than that.

Travel with us as we share a wide variety of music together. How many of our songs can you remember?  Are your favorites mentioned?

Country Roads

We can't talk music in my house without eventually talking "Country". I grew up on Patsy Cline, Hank Snow, Loretta Lynn, Brenda Lee, Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash, John Denver and Roy Clark, just to name a few.

Hee Haw was our weekly entertainment. What a hoot!

My dad's family all seem gifted when it comes to music and their love is Country Music. At some point during all family gatherings, formal or informal, the instruments appear. It doesn't matter if you can play or not, sing or not, everyone gets involved. When you hear the tuning of the instruments, you don't think about it, you just gather round.

Part of the joy of coming from a large family with so many gifted individuals, is the fact you almost always know someone personally "in the business".

We have our own celebrities in The Family Brown. Little known perhaps in some circles, but a huge hit in our family. Uncle Joe was a big teddy bear with his own large family.  He lived and died on the road doing what he loved to do, surrounded always by family and friends.

The country road is traveled often in well worn cowboy boots.

For Country music buffs, please feel free to check out the history of my 'famous' cousins, The Family Brown.

Down Memory Lane

Can you imagine the shear volume of memories we share after knowing each other well over 30 years?

During our musical interlude, we reminisced about songs from long ago and decided to play them. If we couldn’t find them on a CD (we have most on vinyl) we found them on You Tube and listened to them in random order as we remembered them. Here’s just a glimpse:

Burton Cummings-both with the Guess Who and his solos, Elton John, Elvis, Rod Stewart and Gerry Rafferty. And as always when discussing classic rock we had to listen to Stairway to Heaven and Hotel California.

Music and memories are often associated with movies. We searched for, and found, some of our favorite musical and live theatre pieces including songs from George Gershwin, and movie sound tracks from Grease, The Sound of Music, A White Christmas and Troy.

We have had the pleasure of seeing some of the best theatre of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Phantom of the Opera, Evita and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. We found many from these as well.

Memories of Miss Saigon included the amazingly authentic sound of a helicopter dropping down right above our heads. We reminisced about the dancing and music in Mama Mia and relived the music of Queen through an interesting plot and amazing light show from We Will Rock You.

The Flower Duet ('Sous le dôme épais') from Lakmé

Le Nozze Di Figaro

Discovery Road

I love Whitney Houston, Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion’s voices because you can almost hear bells tinkling their sound is so clear.

Together we discovered Barbara Streisand’s and Celine Dion’s duet, Tell Him.

Learning something you didn’t know about each other can be quite thrilling.

As he put away the stacks of CD's we had pulled out I thought I would surprise him with one of my all time favorite opera duets to see if he could enjoy something completely out of his comfort zone. I searched You Tube and had it waiting for him.

The surprise was mine for he not only enjoyed it, but shared with me HIS favorite opera. Who knew?  I've posted them both so you can enjoy them too.

I smiled, and we settled down to share the music with eyes closed, breathing gently so as not to disturb the beauty that surrounded us anticipating the goose bumps as we waited for the harmony of two beautifully trained voices.

Technology is such a beautiful thing when you can have the wonders of the music world at your finger tips. From Country to Classical. What a wonderful journey

Thanks Duchess, I am a music lover. I enjoy most but do not really care for Rap or heavy metal. I'd rather be playing!

Duches, Could you imagine a world without music---I cannot! How horrible that would be and like you, I grew up in a family that enjoyed a wide range of music---Country to Opera and beyond. I am listening to New Age right now and sung by an artist I just learned about, by the name of Marcom. A delightful hub by you once again. I always say that music is the soul’s nourishment…. {•.•}

Great Hub Duchess!

We both share a fondness for Garth and Whitney Houston. Have you listened to her lateness release? Unfortunately her voice is not the classic Whitney I have come to love, but still there are a couple of songs I really like.

I enjoyed this!

Thanks Jen, I agree about Whitney's voice and it's a shame. But yes, still a talented lady.

I enjoyed the musical interlude that led to the creation of this hub!

Thanks for sharing this. My little lonely family also has a great love of music. My husband and I have attended many concerts and musicals. My son is learning to play violin, I was always involved in music in some way throughout the years. I finally had the time to sit down and catch up on my emails.

Duchess,

Great Hub. I'm a big music fan. I don't care much for alot of the music today, I can't understand the words. I grew up listening to movie soundtracks like Exodus, West Side Story and Oklahoma. Others songs like "Moon River" sang by Andy Williams, songs by Johnny Mathias and we can't leave out "The Chairman of the Board" - Frank Sinatra. Oops, I just gave my age away. lol

By the way, I was born and reared in the "Country Roads" state of West By-God Virginia.

Great additional songs Legacy. You should take a tour of them on You Tube. It's a great way to spend an evening. Create your own Musical Interlude and share it with a friend or a loved one. It's become an almost nightly ritual in our house.

We don't have a TV in the living room but we do have a computer corner with a 24 inch screen and the sub woofers hooked up to it. After dinner music of any kind on demand. It's great!

Lucky you to be born and raised in "God's Country"!
