the Beginning

Robert Nesta Marley was born on February 6, 1945 in the parish of St. Annes in Nine Miles, Jamaica. His parents, Norval Sinclair Marley and Cedella 'Ciddy' Malcom. His father Norval was a British Marine officer who, after Marley's birth left and had very little contact with him over the course of his life.

In 1961, at the age of sixteen, Bob Marley released his first recorded song, 'Judge Not,' and four years later in 1965 he formed the 3 man band trio, 'the Wailers,' giving birth to what many fans know as "Bob Marley and the Wailers."

The group also included reggae star, Peter McCintosh who would later become better known as 'Peter Tosh.'

Bob Marley & the Wailers

In 1968, the Wailers would release several singles including the previous year's "Bend down low/Mellow Mood" under disbanded lable Wail 'n Soul 'm Records before releasing a group album.

Later that same year in 1968, the group would form new lable 'Tuff Gong' records. After years of recording singles with little to no finincial backings, the group would finally have their prayers answered when in 1971, Island Records forwarded them 8,000 pounds for a full length album production deal. In turn the Wailers would make history becoming the first reggae band to recieve that much endorsements and have access to state of the art recording equipment; a luxory far fetched in the imaginations of other reggae artists at the time.

From 1971 to 1976, Bob Marley and the Wailers would go on to release 4 group albums, 'Catch a Fire, Burnin', Natty Dread' and 1976's 'Rastaman Vibrations' which earned them band of the year by Rolling Stones Magazine and climbed to the top of the charts. During that span, Marley and the Wailers released such classics as 'Get up, Stand up, I shot the sheriff,' and one of Marley's more renown singles, 'No Woman no Cry.'

Soon after however, the band split apart and group members Bunny Livingstone and Peter McCintosh left to pursue solo careers of their own, but would be replaced by new members and Bob Marley and the Wailers would go on to record 1977's 'Exodus,' which propelled Bob Marley into international stardom.

The rest...is history.

Rise up this mornin',

Smiled with the risin' sun,

Three little birds

Pitch by my doorstep

Singin' sweet songs

Of melodies pure and true,

Sayin',"This is my message to you-ou-ou:"....Great Hub! I love Bob Marley
