Musicians Who Believe in Christ
68Many musicians believe in Christ and use him as an inspiration for their songs and daily activities. They may not be the traditional going to church every Sunday types, but they believe in a higher power and use that as a driving force in their lives. Rock and Roll has the reputation for being about wild parties, sin, and self gratification. However, rock and roll is not always what it seems and many famous rock stars are Christians or converted to Christianity during their adult lives. These musicians express their faith in their lyrics or their humanitarian works because they have been moved to do so. Some people may be surprised to hear that these musicians are Christians because they do not attend church every Sunday, or they may not even speak openly about their beliefs. Nevertheless, they are still Christians and their believes often touch upon their lyrics and humanitarian efforts. There are many Christian musicians in the rock and roll industry, but in the hub I am going to discuss two of my favorites: Bono and John Lodge.

Bono of U2 Fame
U2 is one of my favorite bands and I always have loved the music from their Joshua Tree album. Bono is a wonderful man and I respect his humanitarian efforts in Africa . The Joshua Tree album was one of my favorites because it took place in a location that I went to many times with my family. I remember looking at pictures of my grandpa holding me as a baby at Joshua Tree National Monument and I remember looking at these regal trees that hold their arms up to the heavens. These trees are very special to me and I feel the pioneers who crossed the Mojave were very astute at naming the magnificent trees after the an Old Testament patriarch. The images of Bono and his band-mates at Joshua Tree are beautiful and the lyrics from their album are moving and thought provoking.
I Still Haven't Found What I Am Looking For
Bono has shared in several interviews that he has never considered himself to be a perfect Christian, but his belief in Christ is his saving grace such as in the song "I Still Haven't Found What I Am Looking For". Many of his lyrics deal with topics such as questioning your faith and coming back to it in times of trouble and need. Bono is known for colorful language and grandiose rock and roll antics, but he is also known for his humanitarian efforts in Africa. He has shared that his belief in Christ has been the catalyst towards donating money and time for the less fortunate people of the world. Bono speaks of a simple form of Christianity and his faith continues to be a touchstone in his daily life.
This great musician is an example of a man who can have faith in Christ through faith alone and not having to be the most perfect person in the world. Jesus pointed out in out in chapter eight of the book of John that those who are without out sin should caste the first stone, which is the most powerful piece of Christian advice in the entire Bible. Christians should try their best to follow the Bible and live good lives, but Jesus realizes we are only human and that we all fall short of the glory of God. I enjoy Bono's attitude because he knows he has not lived a perfect Christian life, but his belief in Christ's sacrifice has helped him to accept we receive salvation as a gift and not as something we constantly have to do penance for. Right now I know many people reading this will not agree with me, and you are welcome to tell me I am wrong in the comments section, but I am writing this hub because I am a Christian and I admire Christian musicians who are not afraid to share their beliefs with the world.
John Lodge of the Moody Blues: A Christian Man
John Lodge is another musician who has used Christ as a source of inspiration in his life. In interviews Lodge admitted he has read about other religions, but he came back to the evangelical beliefs he grew up with. Some of the lyrics John has written show his faith in Christ. Lodge's faith has helped him to remain faithful to his wife and never experiment with drugs when many other musicians were busy getting high in the late sixties. One time Lodge had a conversation with a minister during a party at a hotel and both of them remarked how odd it was they were surrounded by all the wild things happening around them. John admits he does not attend church every Sunday, but reading the Bible and his simple belief in Christ have got him through some very chaoltic times in the rock and roll industry. His fans that meet him in person always say he is happy with a smile on his face, which shows his faith is a driving force in his daily activities. On the John Lodge website he writes keep the faith, which is another indication that he believes in as positive Christ centered lifestyle. I always admire people who have a simple faith in Christ and who are able to admit that they are not perfect. To me, they are truly practicing Christianity, even if they may not be the most devout of the bunch. Christianity is about how we treat people every day and having a Christian view of the world, not just reading the Bible in church.

wow girl there are a lot more than that! Mxpx, a lot of rappers, etc etc etc
Thanks for the wonderful comments LdsNana :). You are right Lady Luck, there are many more than these two, but I am mostly familar with John Lodge and Bono so I wrote about them. I do not really know anything about rap, but I would love to read about anyone who writes more about it. Thanks for sharing :)
Nice article, Thanks.
Thank you for stopping by Karen :).
Thank You for pointing these guys out as Christians. I am also grateful that you noted the fact that humans are not perfect, sometimes I feel like those who are casting stones forget that judging others is somewhat wrong. Nice hub SweetiePie!
Thanks for stopping by and leaving comments C.S. Alexis :).
SweetiePie - an original and highly educational hub. While I have heard the Moody Blues, I don't know the individual members, so it was lovely to read about John Lodge. Bono is better know to me since he is from my native city of Dublin, Ireland. I agree - he is a Christian man since actions speak louder than words.
Hi Pjdscott,
Since you probably know a great deal about Bono I would love you to share any observations you have about him. Thanks for stopping by :).
Hi Sweetie Pie. I am a drummer who loves christ. Nice Hub. Thumbs up
You are so cool drummer boy! I would love to hear some of your music if it is posted online.
Nice hub SweetiePie! I agree with you on several points.. particularly about church attendance in contrast to a relationship w/ Christ. It is by grace we are saved, through faith, not works (although faith without works is dead, so I hope nobody gets the wrong idea since I'm not saying it's not important to doing good deeds). The Bible tells us we are not to get out of the habit of meeting together, yet for some, church attendance can often be for the wrong reasons....some of the "mega churches" in particular are likely to have a large number of attendee's who are there for the social part or even see it as "entertainment" since a charismatic speaker and the arts incorporated to programs can be more the draw in contrast to being there to worship or celebrate God....then there are those who go "religiously" but don't really grow...some go because they think they have to in order to be right w/God....it really all goes back to being a matter of the heart.
I appreciate Bono too and also have the Joshua tree album - I didn't know the story behind the Joshua trees or their location, and love the imagery you contribute w/ your words in regards to how they appear to you ...beautiful. So again thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the wonderful comments Christinekv.
Great article. I have been a musician all my life and Christ has always been there too. I have played in many different areas: but faith can be shown in all areas of musical perofrmance even Bars and clubs. I always remember that Christ did not go to the goody goody places but with the common man and his domain. I am Catholic. Thanks.. and Take Care Bill
Thank you for sharing your story wljmbill. Have you posted any of your music online? I would like to hear it :).
I enjoyed this hub, Sweetie Pie, and I think it is great that you are writing about your passions. I have always been a fan of Bono and U2's music, but I wasn't aware that he is a Christian. Thanks for the great hub and keep writing what is close to your heart! :)
Thanks for taking the time to read my hub and make the nice comments. Bono is a Christian even though he admits he is not the "perfect" go to church every Sunday role model, but I think it is his faith that speaks for itself. Also, John Lodge is a very great example of a Christian man whose faith inspires many of his songs.

SweetiePie -
Great Hub:-) I have always felt that many gifted musicians must attribute their talents to God, else how can they explain these great blessings and the ability to affect so many others?
Like all of us, we can choose how we will use our own talents or gifts - positive or negative.
Positive results are love filled -- and who else can take the credit for that?
Clearly choosing that which is good, will lead a person to God.
I enjoy many kinds of religious music from many different people, as well as all music that is inspiring and uplifting in anyway!
I particularly love rock n roll!
