If you are familiar with the Linux operating system then you must have heard a lot of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a Debian-based distribution of Linux. It is widely known for its “usability” and user-friendly environment.
Here are some of the applications you might consider installing after a fresh installation of Ubuntu Linux. First, go to Applications > Accessories> Terminal.
Then type (without the apostrophes)

‘sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude safe-upgrade’

ubuntu tweak

1. Ubuntu Tweak
This application allows easy management and tweaking of different settings of your desktop. E.g Compiz, Desktop, software, security etc.
To install it go to: http://ubuntu-tweak.com/downloads and follow the instructions.

vlc media player
vlc media player

2. VLC
VLC media player, lets you play a lot of media files, from audio to videos. For most of my videos I use  vlc. So, here’s how you get it:

‘sudo aptitude install vlc’

skype
skype

3. Skype
Most of you probably know what skype is but if you don’t, skype is a voIp client which can be used to make voice and video calls over the Internet. Here’s how you can install it:

‘sudo aptitude install skype’

It can also be installed from the add/remove or Ubuntu software center (For Ubuntu 9.10) or in Ubuntu Tweak.

Gnome-Do
Gnome-Do

4. Gnome-Do
This is basically a swiss-army knife of software; it can find files, launch programs, look for WebPages and bookmarks, etc. For installation go to: http://do.davebsd.com/wiki/Installing_Do#Ubuntu

set-as-wallpaper menu
set-as-wallpaper menu

5. Nautilus set-as-wallpaper plugin
Most Windows users are used to right-clicking on an image and selecting “Set as Background” , well this option is present in Ubuntu Linux too but with a small addon called nautilus-wallpaper.
This is how you install it:

‘sudo aptitude install nautilus-wallpaper’

After the installation, you will be able to right-click an image and select “set as wallpaper”.

** All the lines in courier font are commands for the Terminal.
