Kevin's Kindergarten Graduation
Kevin's Kindergarten Graduation

Congratulations to all the newly graduating seniors from high schools, colleges and universities around the world! What an exciting time for you! It can be as equally scary I'm sure. This is where you begin to think more for yourself and begin to break the ties to home.

My son, Kevin would have been graduating from high school this next Saturday with the rest of class. However, there are no senior pictures hanging in my corridors, no invitations in the mail, and no cap and gown hanging on the back of his bedroom door. Kevin died in the 7th grade.

As a mother, I had looked forward to this day when I could proudly sit in the audience and watch him walk down the aisle to get his diploma. I also longed to give him advice about how to go out into the world and grab all out of life that he could. Instead, Kevin grabbed all he could out of thirteen years.

I want this hub to be a place where adults can go to leave advice for all the graduates. Feel free to leave you comments to them below. Graduates, I hope you realize the wisdom you could gain by listening to the people leaving advice here. Good luck to you all!

The Advice I Would Have Given Kevin

The first thing you need to do is to take about 30 minutes in a quiet place outside in nature and write down as many things you can think of that you'd like to do, see, or accomplish in your lifetime.

Don't place any limits on this list. Don't worry about how you're going to accomplish them.

Really begin to make some decisions about what you want.

Next, don't settle. Pure and simple, don't settle. You've made up your mind and there is no need to settle.

You are welcome to change your mind along the way, but that isn't settling.

There is no need to share this list with anyone.

Periodically, check back on your list. Mark off the things you've already accomplished, modify or delete ones that you no longer want, and add news ones to the list.

As you do this, you'll be amazed at how much you are able to accomplish.

Don't think you can keep up with it in your head, you must write it down.

With jobs for school and university leavers scarce, many under-25s are finding they have a talent for business. Can they ride to the rescue of the economy? San Francisco's polite society is claimed to be a product of its mature drinking laws (Letters, December 15). Indeed, this city is still America's politest, but using a pleasant night out there "many years ago" to pass judgment on Sydney is absurd. There are plenty of places in the US with the same drinking laws that manage to be much more unruly.

Thanks Shalini, that was very kind of you. I have always had a fondness for the rest of his graduating class. They haven't forgotten Kevin and that means a lot to me.

Any advice for them?

Your life is before you and while it is very important to be focussed on what you want to do, take time to smell the roses!

What would I tell them.. What would I have taken to heart? Spend time volunteering for the less fortunate. Be bold, but not arrogant. Be fearless, not reckless, don't miss the joy, but life isn't always about joy, it's about commitment. Don't travel the road of life alone, but be careful who your companions are.  What you do for a career should not define who you are inside, but choose a career that doesn't conflict with who you are inside. Be honest, be polite, be compassionate.  Be someone you would want to be a friend with. I think that's what I would say.

You made me cry.. for my grown son, for a life I traded for less and a future yet to be. I'm blessed to have you as a friend. Thank you!
