Mixed Aviary

Small Parrots - In this aviary I have White Chested (Neophemias) Weiros (Cockatiels)Parrots.

Finches - There are Cordon Blue, Bengalese and Gouldians.

By having 1 pair of each these birds all live in harmony together. Sometimes if you have 2 pairs of the same variety, they can become jealous and fight.

Its breeding season, which is obvious. These two have breed many young offspring for me. Friendly, eat from my hand and one talks and wolf whistles me

Weiro's - Sometimes called Cockatiels. These are a very friendly bird. They are easily bred in captivity and can be hand tamed and can also be taught to talk and whistle many of our songs.

Sexing - the males can easily be distinguished by the brighter orange patch on their cheek. This is not so with the Lutino or Albino colored Werio's. The stripes under wings and tail feathers is another indicator.

Breeding - these are excellent breeders laying 4-5 eggs incubation usually under 3 weeks. These birds love fresh greens, especially thistles from the garden or lettuce.

SULPHUR CREST- This is Tank, he was a beautiful bird. He had the run of our back patio and gardens. He especially loved to get up in our laundry shower and play with the curtains.

He also used to play in and out of our passion vines and pinch the fruit.

CRIMSON PARROT

The Crimson Parrot (Platycercus elegans elegans) is a beautiful melodeous bird.

These birds love to congregate around the parks in the Dandenongs. They are typical seed eaters and also love various fruits. They love to eat out of the hands of tourists.

Twenty Eight Parrots

These West Australian brilliant friendly birds are commonly known as a Twenty Eight. Also known as a Cloncurry Parrot, Mallee Ringneck Parrot, Port Lincoln Parrot, the Scientific Name: Barnardius zonarius semitorquatus. Their call sounds like they are saying "Ricky Ricky".

Length is about approx 15 - 16.5 inches

These birds all have a green body and a yellow ring or collar around their necks and are referred to as Australian Ringnecks

They love fresh fruit and are often cursed because they steal fruit from peoples precious fruit trees.

Our Eastern Kings

These Beautiful birds are enjoying a shower under our new water spray system. They are completely saturated and look a real mess. Each bird hangs upside down trying to allow the water to completely drown all their feathers.

We set it to come on each afternoon so as to cool them down in the early afternoon. They really love it, much more than bathing in their drinking water.

It was certainly worth the investment spent to set this up for them. All our birds have the same facilities available to them now.

Eileen! I love your article! I'm an avid 'aviarian' too.

I have had cockatiels for the past twenty years. When the kids were young they were forever bringing unwanted birds home. Well better said any unwanted animal. (to be honest I won't tell them I really miss the challenge of befriending those lost souls). Question: what kind are those pink little darling in your picture above. I've never seen them before.

GREAT HUB

regards Zsuzsy

Sent email but came back. so putting info in here

Try using a couple of small sticks. Hold one end and put the other end under the bird to encourage him to step on the stick. Then do same with other stick and make the bird step up from one to the other. When he gets used to that after a few days. Try one stick and then your finger. Do this until he gets used to you again. If he bites. Then put him in his cage for a day. Then repeat until he settles down again. Hope this helps you

Thank you very much for that. We have had to reduce the number of birds we keep lately as want to travel, so most of my finches and smaller parrots have gone
