My Biggest Fear Of National Health Care

Background

My family just went around with a health condition and learned some things on doctors, diagnosis and treatment.  This bring up big concerns on how it would have ended up under a national healthcare system.

The Story

My son had a bout with asthma about eighteen months ago. During the treatment of this, Doctor decided to take a CT scan of his lungs to verify no other problems. From this, there showed a spot on the liver. They decided to take an MRI of his liver and see what that was all about. Afterwards, there was no apparent diagnosis of what the spot was, but 95% chance of it being a cluster of blood cells. And that we should monitor it every four to six months to make sure it was not growing and everything was okay with it.

After monitoring it two times, the spot had grown, which caused a big concern. Now to let you know a little bit about the background of these doctors, they are considered specialists, but they are in a small hospital. The internal medicine expert had never seen this before, and his comment was " I know it is not cancer because he is not dead/" What??? This is the only way you can diagnose something? Also, the local radiologists reading the MRI had never seen this before.

So with having a friend who is currently dying from fibrolamellar carcinoma type liver cancer, and she recommended that we leave these quacks behind and go to Mayo Clinic, which is less than a two hours drive away.

With that we set up an appointment with the liver cancer specialist at Mayo clinic and went to see him about it. After discussions with the residence working under him, there was still a big concern and he asked that the expert doctor to come in and look at this. On this, the expert doctor entered and looked over the scans and was able to diagnose what he believed was going on. That the spot was FNH which is basically a non malignant tumor that is very common in livers. The grown is common, early on, but should settle down. The tumor cloud shaped with ragged edges around with which is typical. Also, the growth was not visable without contrast. A cancer would be visable without contrast. Also, the growth was only visable in one plane of image and not the other. So this all was proof that the growth was normal tissue and nothing to worry about.

We to sum this up, under the national health care being proposed, i may not have been able to take my son to Mayo Clinic and get the second opinion. This is sorry scarry for me. That we might have to rely on the local quacks and not be able to call upon the true experts. This would be such a drop in medical care quality.

I think Obama is rushing these things through too fast, and needs to quit using the poor economy as an excuse for him to push through fast legislature. This is totally wrong.

It would all depend on how they set it up. I live in Wisconsin and use the state insurance. I'm getting much better care than when I had it through my employer. For the first time ever I'm getting results. But so many others in other locations don't get it as good. The national system could work if it was done properly or it could kills thousands if not.

I believe no matter what health care plan is in place or we have, there will always be an opportunity to go to specialists if one can afford it. People come from all over the world seeking specialists in this country. You were lucky or wise to have a plan that included specialists - most don't.

I like the fact that Obama has often talked of including prevention - this would be a fundamental change to any plan and mindset. It would turn the focus from "death" as they now diagnose from, to health and our quality of life.

Thank you for sharing eovery - glad your son is OK. Not sure how a CT scan of his lungs showed his liver but hey - as long as they can justify added procedures, we're as close to prevention awareness as we may get.

Thanks forf hubbing by James and SEM.

A CT scan of the lungs catches the top portion of the liver.

Yah, I am a little upsset with our company who cut some of the wellness programs. I feel they will pay more in the future.

Keep on hubbing

We all pay more when prevention and wellness aren't considered eovery - profound point made.

I think the new healthcare will overall send the economy into a depression. The new healthcare is going to add more taxes on a already struggling economy. More doctors will likely change their mind on pursuing healthcare as a career and could likely make a career change. Why would doctors want to do 7 years in school for government limited pay? This will limit number of doctors to number of patients massively reducing efficient treatment.

Thanks for hubbing by SEM Pro and Marinealways24. I am afraid you are right MA24. They are already threatening to cut Medicare, how do they think they can give everyone healthcare.

A bad trick the government has not learned how to over come is, for an example gas tax, we are driving less so the governmen is making less money on the gas tax. So what do they have to do, raise the taxes to make up for it. So we drive less because the price is higher and they raise the tax again. This becomes is a spiraling loop and it could drive it until taxes are so high, that no one can buy gas, and they do make less from the higher taxes on gas, because no can afford to buy the gas. Government has to learn to go lean when times are hards so the economy can take care of themselves. But no what does own "smarter than everyone else" President administration do, they want to spend, spend, spend, and then introduce every law that can to get taxes, i.e. cap and trade, etc.

This just makes me sick. How stupid, stupid, stupid.

So they want to take over health care, because is 20% of the economy. They control health care and the big automobile companies, and 50% of the economy is government, already. They control almost all of it.

Well enough of a rant.

Keep on Hubbing!
