My Brush With Death and The Angel

About ten years ago, I had a very frightening / enlightening experience. At the risk of everyone thinking I'm a whack job, I want to share it with you.

I had boiled some potatoes for supper ( can't remember the rest of the menu ). My husband ( ex-husband now ) was filling his plate, as I sat down with my plate in the living room ( we always ate and watched the tube ). I took a large bite of a potato. Remembering I had left my drink in the kitchen, I called out to him to please, bring my drink in with him. I had always been taught to never talk with my mouth full, because of good manners, not that you may choke! With that in mind, let me tell you, I DID choke. It was a very large bite and that potato stuck in my throat ! It was a HORRIBLE feeling ! He could tell I was choking, maybe, because I was running around trying to give myself the Heimlich. He started the maneuver on me, to no avail. We jumped in the truck and sped our way to the Emergency room ! I could not talk, but there was a very small amount of air keeping me from passing out. It was a terrible sound, and I'll never forget it. It was a very faint, high pitched wheeze followed by a gurgling sound ! EEWWW ! It was awful ! We didn't have too far to drive, probably about 7 miles, but it seemed like an eternity ! I remember thinking all kinds of crazy thoughts, like," Oh my God, who will take care of my kids? Thank God I have life insurance. Can't he drive any F'in' faster ? Step on it Asshole ! Those potatoes sucked, I should have let 'em boil longer, they're way too damn hard ! Never talk with your mouth full ! I'll be known as the woman who choked on a potato !" Suddenly the potato started to shift and I knew if it moved even the smallest bit, I would lose what little air I was getting. It would all be over soon. I was soon to be remembered as the woman who choked on a potato ! I turned my head, as we passed a highly wooded area. The stars were twinkling brightly. I noticed a figure in the treetops. I focused on it...what was it ? ! It seemed to glow. It looked like an image moving towards me ! I shut my eyes ! I couldn't look...I felt fear..fear I was dying......." Oh my God, Is this an angel ? I know it is...open your eyes, you wuss and check it out ! If I don't see it, it's not happening...this is not happening !...I'm too young to die ! Don't look ...don't look ! ...Our Father Who Art In Heaven...please, forgive me of my sins, please, look after my children....please.." Eyes still clenched tight, a miracle happened, That potato came shooting out of my throat and landed in my hand ! I swear this is a true story ! My husband stopped the truck and we both cried and cried !

My throat was so sore that I was hoarse for a month, and still to this day, I have a way too sensitive gag reflex.

Was it an angel ? There was very little air getting to my brain, at that point. Maybe, I just imagined it. I don't think so, I believe it was an angel. I wish I wouldn't have been such a chickenshit and opened my eyes to gaze upon the being. For some reason, I thought if I didn't look, it wouldn't take me, but when it's your time to go, it's your time to go. Evidently, my angel didn't think it was my time or maybe she thought, " What a puss...open your eyes....oh, just let her live for awhile, let her gain some courage." I don't know for sure what happened, I only know it was a true miracle. Thank you, Angel.

I've actually had a few brushes with death in my life, and for some reason, have always lived to tell the tale. I'll save those for another time.
