A Good Guy Gets Clobbered
The name Denis Gaskell may mean nothing to you.
But he's one of the longest surviving "good guys" on the internet.
He's been teaching internet basics to internet newcomers since 1997, as well as sharing his very keen insights and philosophy of life.
You may know him as "Boogie Jack", who writes "Almost a Newsletter".
Well, Dennis's hosting account was hacked recently and his business was ruined.
To the extent that he's had to sell his house.
He's written about what happened to him, and how you can take steps to prevent the same thing from happening to you.
His story, called "My Business Was Ruined By a Hacker" is available at http://www.boogiejack.com/software/HackerReport.pdf
This is a direct link. The report is completely free.
You don't have to leave your credit card number, email address, or a pint of blood.

Wow, I just read that. That sucks. Except that it seems like that dude knows enough about that stuff to recover. If he had to sell his house in the same month or two that he got hacked, then he's a much better web designer than he is personal financier LOL. Still, except for the technical stuff that went over my head, that was interesting.
Fascinating, particularly the part about strengthening passwords. (I have been opting for the near-match character.) Thanks, Eric.
Excellent reprt you've passed on to us Eric and it acts as a warning to all of us about the number of sharks circling the waters on the internet.
Wow, thats great information! Thanks Eric. I'll definitely be digging this one.

PS Nice photo BTW.
Thanks for the info. It never ceases to amaze me the depths some people sink to. Being the victim of property crime twice in the last two weeks grants me new perspective on the truly bad people out there. I'm sure with his talent and reputation Boogie Jack will get his groove back in no time. Nice hub.
I had this happen to my blog, well not to that extent but if someone searched for my blog, and it came up the first page, and you clicked on the Google link it took you to some bogus company. On the surface everything looked legit. But when you clicked, it wasn't my site. I went into the Googles Forum and asked for help. They took my site off the Internet, or so it appeared because I couldn't find AlyiceEdrich.com anywhere. I resubmitted the domain and wella, everything was back to normal. Took about a week.
Love the new pic, by the way. Very sexy.
Thanks so much Eric. I just printed up his story and I'll get back to you after I read it.
Nice hub, great information here.
Eric, good hub, and I read the report you linked, too. Jesus! That poor guy. I went through my computer and did a thorough search for PDFs. None, I'm happy to say.
I've always felt safe and secure, "Why would anyone want to hack into MY computer? Nothing to steal, eh?" But, it's not about that, is it? The thrill for those bastards is just doing it. Scary...
Shadesbreath, I think most people would have to sell their house if their income dropped by more than 90% and they knew it would not recover to its previous level for at least 6-12 months.
The average family has less than three months of living expenses in savings.
I used to subscribe to boogiejack long time ago. Somehow my subscription got lost in an email upheaval. I enjoyed it, I'm sorry that happeed to him.

Well, aside from measures he proposes, diversification will help dramatically. :)
