My Favorite Pulled Pork BBQ Sauce: Charlie Mills
64My husband and I had a genuine redneck wedding. A keg of beer, blue jeans wardrobe, minister on the front porch, and a pig pickin'. Charlie Mills Famous Bar-B-Que Sauce made the food a big hit - that pig disappeared!
It's not as bad as it sounds, even though a few of my liberal Chapel Hill, NC friends didn't show. Nearly a hundred people chowed down, and Charlie Mills made it the best pig I've ever tasted. Okay, something about the weather, the company, the pig cookers, and the significance of the day may have contributed to the taste of the pig, but Charlie Mills is still my favorite bbq sauce.

I was hoping to find a website by now, but at least you can order from Acre Stations and get a little historical background. I loved learning that Charlie started selling the mix to raise money for his own wedding. How fitting! Charlie's son, Jarvis, continues the family business now, in a typical eastern North Carolina family way. We order our Charlie Mills by picking up the phone and calling Jarvis. Everytime I've ordered, I've received the mix in the mail before my check has cleared.
That's right, it's a mix. You add the package contents to a gallon of Apple Cider Vinegar. We have experimented with the mix as a rub, as well, but the trick is really to "love the sauce." After you mix the sauce, keep it handy so you can turn the bottle now and then to gently stir it. As it ages, it gets better and better.
And Charlie Mills Famous Bar-b-que Mix is good for more than a pig pickin'. We use it regularly for chicken wings, and when a whole hog is too much, Charlie Mills doctors up a boston butt just right.
We've hosted and visited a lot of pig pickings but I've never seen a pig completely devoured like the one at our wedding feast. Thank you, Charlie Mills!

And it goes really well on "southern Greens". I sometimes even use it as a salad dressing when you want something different, but light.
Thanks, LeaAnne - how could I have forgotten! We use it on collards all the time!
LeaAnne is right. I'll give you a quick recipe.
Fresh cucumber, some red onion, chopped, a fresh tomatoe, diced. Toss all with a little Charlie Mills mix. MMMM
Very refreshing little salad for any summer cook out.
Lord, ya'll are makin me hungry. Would it go good on pig feet? I love pig-feet. I suppose I'll have to order some and see what it tastes like. We had a place in the town where I grew up that made the most wonderful bbq sauce...but nobody makes it like that any more. Apple cider, you say? I am going to have to experiment! Thanks for the cute story and the ideas....and I guess the hunger pangs, too! =o)
Thanks, Karen, but that's Apple Cider VINEGAR, just wanted to clarify :-)
I'm sorry, I can't confirm the pigs feet part. Some things are just more than even my Southern roots can take. But Charlie Mills is definitely by choice for all the pig parts that I do like, so I bet it would work for you.
I LOVE BBQ! Great hub!
Cheers!

good afternoon we live in mass but had first picked up some charlie's bar-b-que mix at a pig farm on our way back and forth from our house up here to our house in down east. it is the best and everyone up here loves it and can't believe it comes from a pig farm in north carolina.........my question is can anyone tell me the name of the pig farm ??? we have 2 dogs one is a ridgeback I fell in love with from a fruit farm down east and brought back with me and the other is a golden who both love the pigs ears from the pig farm I want to see if we can order more for them but can not find the farm thanks for any and all help marcey
