My Favorite Vampire TV Shows
85My Favorite Vampire TV Shows
Everyone has their favorite vampires, their favorite vampire books and their favorite vampire TV show and movies.
And their are a lot of favorite vampire lists out there as well.
But I thought I would just throw my two cents worth in and list my favorite vampire TV shows.
1, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)
Now I LOVE True Blood (which comes later) and after True Blood gets about four or five seasons under it's belt, it may topple my number one.
But as of right now, Buffy stands alone.
The writing, the acting, the special effects (which even with today's advances still look pretty good) the characters, all combined to make Buffy a TV legend.
I mean c'mon, they teach university courses on Buffy!
The show ended on May 20, 2003 and Buffy DVDs and videos are still hot topics.
I just finished watching all the episodes in order and I still like it.
And yes Buffy is technically about a vampire SLAYER not a vampire, but it gave us Angel, Spike, Darla and Drusilla.
2. Angel (1999-2004)
Yes Angel had the carry over punch from Buffy.
And adding Spike to the cast didn't hurt any either.
But David Boreanaz really shone through as the Vampire that has a soft compassionate side, but could hand you your head on a silver platter at the drop of a hat.
He even got to have a dark side, Angelus, that despite how evil he was, you still kinda liked him.
Okay I did.
3. True Blood (2008 -)
The reasons Sundays are great.
Like I said, in a few years if True Blood keeps going like it is, if may take over my number one spot.
Sookie, Bill (Vampire Bill...I love that), Jason, Eric, Sam, heck, the whole cast is awesome.
The show literally had me hooked in the first ten minutes and hasn't let go since.
4. Kindred: The Embraced (1996)
Now things get a bit harder.
Even though it only ran for eight episodes, I really liked this show.
A lot of it had to do with the fact I played Vampire: The Masquerade (I was a Brujah) and even got to LARP (live action role play) a few times.
I thought Mark Frankel (may he rest in peace) was awesome as Julian Luna, and I always like Stacy Haiduk.
5. Ultraviolet (1998)
No, not the movie (though I was really disappointed the movie wasn't based on the show), the 1998 British television series.
If you haven't seen it check it out. I think they still have episodes up at YouTube.
And look for a character from True Blood that plays a vampire here as well in the first couple of episodes.
Though he has a British accent (because he really is British) in Ultraviolet.
6. Young Dracula (2006-2008)
Another British series and one of my favorite guilty pleasures, even though it was technically a kids show.
I think part of the reason I liked this show was Count Dracula played so over the top by Keith-Lee Castle.
Imagine the Count mixed with a young Ozzy Osbourne.
Hey, Spike looked like Billy Idol, why not? (I know, according to Buffy mythos, Billy Idol stole his look from Spike).
I think you can catch some episodes on Veoh and maybe YouTube.
Like I said, it's really a kid's show so don't go in expecting True Blood lite.
It's just fun.
And now for the Vampire TV shows I didn't care for.....
I know it's very unpopular on the internet not to like these, but sorry, they just didn't do anything for me. ....
Forever Knight, Moonlight and Blood Ties.
Though to be honest, I need to give Blood Ties a few more episodes maybe.
I know Forever Knight and Moonlight both have legions of fans out there, but like I said, I just couldn't get into either one.
And so far Vampires Diaries is just recycled Twilight mixed with 90210.
Blade: The Series....did anyone actually like that?
Dark Shadows I know is a classic, but really, I have never seen a single episode.
So I can't say yea or nay on that one.
By the way, I haven't seen the Canadian TV series Vampire High yet, but I plan to check that one out.

I love Buffy and Angel! I have all the seasons on dvd and every once in awhile, I will pop them in and sit back and enjoy. I love the character Drucilla.
I liked Dru too.
Like I said, to be a "Slayer" show, they had some of the best developed Vampire characters on TV.
Great article. I especially liked the part about Vampire Diaries being recycled Twilight and 90210. I literally LOLed. Though, I do watch Vampire Diaries I thought your comment was spot on.
Blade had a series? Must've not been too great seeing as I've never heard of it.
If you missed Blade The Series, consider yourself lucky.
I'm gonna give Vampire Diaries some more time. In all fairness, Dollhouse didn't really take off till about the 3rd episode.
Thanks for stopping by!
Dark Shadows had heart. It was often poorly acted, with episodes five days a week and no time for rehearsals, but the writers on that show would try anything, and the charisma of the actors and actresses made up for a lot. If you ever want to see anything involving Dark Shadows, start with the "House of Dark Shadows" movie and/or the 1990 television show remake starring Ben Cross, and then move to the TV episodes.
I love vampire shows, thanks for the post!
I wish True Blood would hurry up and come out with the 3rd season. Trying to fill in the gap with out Vampire fixes (though entertaining) isn't quite the same.
I'm still mad at the fact that they killed off Godric.
I TOTALLY agree.
I understand why they killed him off, but I didn't like it at all.
