My First Memory

The very first thing that I can ever remember is being a young girl of about three years old. I lived with my Mom and Dad on Kingston Avenue in Toronto, just down the street from the Dairy Queen that I believe is still there. It was at the corner of Kingston Road and Danforth Avenue.

Our house on Kingston Road was an older style house. I remember that it was all on one floor. I had to share a bedroom with my sister. My brother wasn't born yet.

I remember my dad broguht home this beautiful white Samoyed dog. His name was Kola and he was my dog. Kola was big too. He wasn't a puppy, but a full grown dog.

Now, Kola was my best bud when I was growing up but he did have one habit that was not very good. Kola would play dead in the middle of Kingston Road. For anyone that grew up in Toronto or knows Toronto, they would know that Kingston Road was a very busy street and it was no street for a dog to be playing dead on.

My dad came home from work one night and our neighbour was telling him that he saw Kola playing dead in the middle of the road again, that day. My dad told me that we would have to get rid of Kola because it was just too dangerous for him. I remember crying because I loved Kola and I didn't want to get rid of him but I do remember thinking that I didn't want Kola to be found dead on the road for real, either.

My dog, Ice.
My dog, Ice.

I guess I have always been searching in my heart for another dog like Kola over all those years. I have had many, many dogs for pets and I think the dog I have right now, Ice, is probably the closest thing I would ever get to Kola. Ice isn't a Samoyed. He is an Australian Cattle Dog. Ice is the most awesomest dog in the whole wide world and quite often since we've gotten Ice, I have had thoughts of Kola.

dwilliamson, very nice hub. I too have an early memory of an old friend, Shaggy, my first dog. She was a part of my family for over 12 years. She got very old and died when I was about 10 years old. No other dog can replace the memories of Shaggy...

Aweee DynamicS, that is so sad about Shaggy. It is always tough to lose a pet.
