My Goals With Hubpages

1. Learn about the Internet and Web

Currently, I spend a fair amount of time on the internet surfing, playing games, and paying bills online. However, I have spent very little time learning about what makes the internet tick. I have read a little about HTML and CSS, and it all seems like a foreign language to me. I am totally clueless about SEO. But it all seems very interesting. I am always eager to learn about new things and share my experience. I appreciate Hubpages since much of the framework for web design has already been done. I can learn about the practical aspects of developing quality content without getting bogged down in technical details. The speed at which I can publish that content is incredible. I look forward to being able to work with Hubpages to produce some quality content while I learn alot.

2. Improve my Writing Style

You only become good at something by doing it and through practice. Malcolm Gladwell, in his book, Outliers, describes the 10,000 hour rule. He argues that it takes roughly 10,000 hours of practice and effort to become a true expert at something. He offers examples like the Beatles to explain the hard work that went into their success. If I am able to publish 3 Hubpages per week and spend an average of 1-2 hours writing, in one year's time, I will have spent about 200 hours improving my writing. Of course that is nowhere near 10,000 hours but it is more than I would have gotten by doing nothing. Besides, I enjoy teaching and sharing what I have learned.

3. Publish My Thoughts and Develop Online Personality

As mentioned, I enjoy teaching what I have learned.  I also enjoy reading and learning myself.  I view my Hubpages as an online depository of my thoughts at any given point in time.  Years later, I can go back and see what I was thinking at the time and follow my development.  Someday, I might wish to retire and use online revenue as a way to supplement my income.  If I have spent some time over the years publishing Hubpages and other online content, I might actually have developed an online personality and following.  This ties into goal number four.

4. Earn a Little Extra Cash

I like the way Hubpages provides the opportunity to earn a little extra cash with only my effort as the limiting factor.  I am not going to delude myself to think that it will replace my career.  However, doing something useful which I enjoy while spending time online that may actually provide me with a little revenue sounds like a good deal to me.  I would like to have my own site someday, but right now, it just sounds like too much effort.  Plus, it sounds awfully complicated since I know so little about hosting, CSS, and all that.  If I could ultimately earn $20 per month by this time next year, I would be thrilled.  Then I could use that extra cash to purchase an ounce of silver each month or pay for hosting for a web site (if I figure it out by then).  Picking up an ounce of silver each month for 10-15 years would be awesome.  It would hold its purchasing power and would serve as a tangible token of my efforts.

Welcome to some fun. You will find some excellent people here and if you need a good laugh once in a while come and meet some kiwis. Good hub, but do you really think it takes us 10,000 hours? I think if you've written as many hubs as you have vs time here.. you have exploded the principle! Enjoy this place.

@Pearldiver: I think for certain tasks and to achieve a certain level of proficiency it might. But that is to get 6 or 7 standard deviations above the norm. After a year or two, I should be able to at least claim a modicum of internet success.
