And Then There Were Nine....

I have five big brothers, and when I was born the town closed for the day ( not that a passerbye would have been any the wiser) ,oh yes it was big news !!,Mac finally had a daughter. Apparently dad had found the reciepe as three girls followed over the next few years.

New Zealand Childhood

Our childhood was adventurous , resourceful and busy. The boys learned to fish and hunt and we mostly played or collected berries or field mushrooms,my dad showed us which plants( for UK people who are looking for Manuka Honey, click on the word 'plants') could help heal us and which plants just want to be left alone!  Of course we all had chores, and probably resembled the Walton family in some ways,in other ways nothing could be further from that description.

Sawmills and Native Forests...NEW ZEALAND

was born in a sleepy little town called Tuatapere,New Zealand ,nestled along the coast of the mighty Pacific Ocean. Although families are separated by long country roads.sprawling farmlands, and towering native trees, everyone knew each other pretty darn well!

As is common in small communities, nothing much happened to cause alot of excitement ,but that didn't stop us from feeling excited when the Obriens new stallion arrived from the West Coast,or that Johnny Kingsley won the boxing tournament again ,we reckoned he was tougher than that guy from over-seas cept no-one could pronounce his name . Bloody foreigners! Twins Bobby and Joey Smithies were in trouble again too and we were warned not to hang around with those two no-gooders. I know one of my brothers did but I was sworn to secrecy with an ice-cream cone and a bag of milk bottles.

New Zealand KIWI Bird ( NZ'ers nicknamed after this Nocturnal Flightless Bird

Where , What , Who helps to know if on vacation or Moving to New Zealand

New Zealand has a population of just over 4million people, and seventy million sheep, which makes for a very healthy export market both in lamb, and sheepskins products. The Souvenir Industry make millions each year ,selling all manner of sheepskin deer-hides.and natural food products like wild honey and mineral cosmetics.

New Zealand's isolation has also meant that by and large livestock and fauna have remained uncontaminated, from diseases. Border controls and airport control (M.A.F) are vigilant and strict with all incoming cargo ,and even what people may bring in on their feet.

Because it is a small island country one outbreak would have the potential to destroy many years of cultivation and harm the trade deals tremendously.

People understand eventually after moving to New Zealand just how important some of the conservation rules are to this land, and soon take pride in taking care of the rivers and forests too.

New Zealanders effectionately are known as Kiwis ,after their National bird 'The Kiwi" ( pictured above)

Since the introduction of stoats ,weasels and ferrets by early English settlers threatens its future. The Kiwi has now joined the list of 'endangered species".

History Snack Bar-And 'Firsts'

First Settlers Came From Hawaiki-nui

Who arrived in waka's ( canoes) and was known as the great migration. All Maori, ( New Zealands first people ) can trace their line back to those first early settlers who carried their ancestors in one of those waka. Scroll down a little to the blue flames to hear Dr Pita's speech "Who Am I", very powerful indeed.

First European

Abel Tasman , a Dutchman was the first white man to sight NZ ,but did not land. He originally thought NZ was part of South America and named New Zealand 'Staten Land' ,later changing that too 'Zelandia'. Several of his crew were attacked so he turned back.

Second Europeans

Europeans did not return to NZ again ,until the arrival of British Explorer, James Cook who landed in 1769. Trade was successful for both parties and they exchanged food, goods, metals , weapons, on occasion even sex.

New Zealand is a young ,vibrant country andhas developed into a multi-cultured society very quickly in the last 30 years.

It was the first country to give women the vote in 1893, USA followed shortly after. From March 2005-Aug 2006 New Zealand was the only nation in which all of the highest offices in the country were held by women.

What Do Kiwis Do For Fun in NZ?

Ok now youre moving to New Zealand ,but what do new zealanders like to do for fun.

.. If you should ever tire of the rain forests ,the Pacific Ocean that laps the shoreline, or the powder soft ski fields during the winter months Kiwis love to spend a lot of their time outside and you will find activity from the gentle relaxed ambiance of a botanical garden, to the other end of the spectrum of extreme adrenalin pumped action.. ( see pics.) and video! above

The towns have a charm of their own ,many proud of homegrown talent whether its Manuka Honey or Flight of The Concords Duo http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7015305969 ( singer /writers Brett McKenzie and Jermaine Clement.) and of course Rachel Hunter and film director Peter Jackson's Lord Of the Rings Trilogy http://www.lordoftherings.net/index_flat.html

The Cities, are modern and vibrant ,with the beach or a forest often minutes away. Efficent bus transit services ,rail and ferry ,connecting both islands are a joy to use. As well as serving the local population ,they are well used to the International traveller providing currency exchange at major airports and downtown facilities.

Haere Mai , and Welcome to New Zealand!!

New Zealand always seemed like such a peaceful place. It seems saved from the hassles of the rest of the world.

Its funny because Kiwis stress over the same things as everyone else ,but I guess the difference is they unlock quickly from things they cannot solve in a hour lol. Thanks for reading Pete.

Good on ya mate.. Kia Ora ... I don't think many really understand the kiwi way of life until they experience it ... Thanks for helping to do that in this hub.  But I was disappointed that Bumble Town - NZ was not on the map... I will give John a bell and see if Key it into the next one.... Does Helen know you've mentioned her?  Connical Hills was a bit like Bumble Town too. Nice Hub. I'll make you a Pav.

hey thanks pearldiver, wasnt your corner of the world on the nz map??? lol at your play on words ,and no I should fire this hub off to Washington aye?. Will share my pav with Aunty Helen. Aww..thanks for your nice comments , would I make a good ambassador for New Zealand ya think.

P.S Actually I was born in a valley surrounded by Rimu ( mostly all gone now) the sad part is NZ is so over-priced I couldnt afford to live there as an adult. But I will return ,its in the stars ,or lotto lol. Ka Kite Ano.

Love it! I like that you put in all the top elected officials (for a time) were women, and that NZ gave women the vote before the U.S.  Had a feeling NZ was ahead of us in many ways. Now I know.

Sounds like a wonderful place. But the flora - so vulnerable. The bottoms of the shoes of incoming travelers have to be checked?  How interesting.  Much like if a horse is ever taken out of Iceland, it can never return because of diseases it might bring back.

But what's a pav???

Hey J ,oh you did come an read it ! does a lil happy dance. Yes they are progressive in many ways but naive too ,investing in so much foreign enterprise or selling off its assets blah blah blah lol...basically translated its pushed real estate prices out of the average working mans hand ,ok ive had my political rant ,onto dessert a much more satifying topic ,which is what Pavlova is ,named after a russian ballerina Anna Pavlova who toured ,loved the dessert ,the waiter didnt know the name so said ..."Pavlova. It has been a favourite in Kiwi families for generations- Fluffy meringue with a slight crust and soft marshmallow center, topped with fresh whipped cream and kiwifruit (of course) any topping is wonderful!!

Oh and the disease free policy is monitored mainly through sensors radar ,built into a certain walkway, plus the usual airport international declarations thing ie have you visited any farms ,zoo's or had pets normally prohibited in NZ etc ( they have no poisonous animals) yet!

Really nice hub about your homeland! A trip to NZ has been a dream of mine since I dated a man from Christchurch (which is also the name of a beautiful landmark college atOxford U. in my birth town) back in about 1970-71. Malcolm McSporan. I always wondered what became of him. When Bush II took office I was so appalled I looked into immigrating to NZ.....or perhaps Canada. NZ has an age limit which I was nearing at the time. Since I was born in Oxford England and have a dual citizenship I think my migration would have been somewhat streamlined. But my roots in Oregon have become deep.....though I know every other state in the US has its own beauty and appeal, and so I decided to weather the storm and stay here. I would have had to leave so much behind. In the end I decided not to travel out of country at all until somehow the US manages to mend its ways and its image. I am confident we are on the way now.

Hi Mary ,thankyou for your lovely comments, wow its a small world , I wasnt born in ChCh-NZ but I did live there for over 20 yrs and my sons are still there,so it remains a very big part of my heart. Yes I understand how decisions are arrived ,and actually Obama winning the Presidency certainly increased my desire to be in the USA. I have found it easy to adapt so far ,though it is quite different too (than NZ) in other ways . But one thing that is serenely reliable are the ocean ,rivers ,trees etc, and it is to that environment Im happiest. Thankyou for visiting ,lovely to meet you!....p.s dont know the name you mentioned , be funny if he were in the U.S (lol)

Very nice! I love the pics - also love your comment above about being able to 'unlock quickly' from things. Good mentality to have!

My FAVORITE schoolteacher was from NZ (gotta remember whereabouts..its been forever..) and she was the most delightful person ever! She'd read to us in her lovely accent and always had the most unique (and wonderfully refreshing) takes on every situation that came up.

Boy, that James Cook really made the rounds didn't he? :)

I'm captivated by and aching to visit your lovely native land.

Oh Roo ,thanks for dropping in and yep that "unlock" thingy sure helps unload negatives out there ( doesnt the crap pile up somedays) lol. Thanks too for sharing your memories ,wow its a small world in many ways! James Cook sure did get around ,lol in more ways than one I imagine (ahem)! lol, never trust a sailor they say, one of my ancestors (tribe) strongest strengths was sailing too .so maybe its a male trait ..... yep sailing too ..lol.

When Im back in NZ which one day Im sure I will ,dont hesitate to hola back at me ....

I dont think NZ is better than Australia ,ok I do ,lol but seriously I honestly just think its amazing that considering the two countries are only 3 hrs apart by plane ,they might as well be 20 hrs in respect to the contrasting features of the two very distinct lands.!

I am an avid reader of the stories of the great Captain James Cook and his many adventures. Hence, I do have some basic knowledge of New Zealand and its history. Funny enough, I always forget that Kiwi is the name of the bird. Here in this corner of the world we refer to the delicious fruits while speaking of Kiwis.
