My Love-Hate Relationship with Pringles

An Observation

Last night, after buying a can of Pringles and sitting down to snack on them and watch a movie, a new revelation took place. Like so many other things, my feelings toward Pringles were a mixed bag, or can. Could it be true? A love-hate relationship with Pringles?? And, alas it is. How very telling. Nothing really is all that simple for me, but I am learning to embrace my overthinking and overanalysis, even when it comes to Pringles.

So for those of you who also have shades of gray when it comes to Pringles, and life, here is how I handled this particular situation. I took action! First, I listed the things I love about Pringles and immediately followed that list with the things I did not like. Next, I looked at the list and decided if the pros outweighed the cons. This analysis could then help guide future buying experiences.

Pringles Love There are many things to love about Pringles, including:

  • The unique packaging. I love the fact that Pringles come in that tubular can, which keeps the chips fresh effortlessly. How many times have you thrown out half-eaten bags of chips due to the fact that they got stale, even though you thought you had sealed the bag properly? Well, as long as you put the lid on the Pringles, you will not have this problem.
  • The variety of flavors. Pringles seems to often just outdo themselves with the huge variety of flavors. While other chips seem to finally be catching on, it is my strong belief that Pringles really was a pioneer in the flavor revolution, offering the norm such as regular salted and the unusual such as pizza or spicy quacamole. Even better, the flavors are consistently good and intense.
  • Intensity. While mentioned in the point above, the intensity of a Pringles chip deserves its own bullet. I find that the chips are not only bursting with flavor, but also this intensity helps me with portion control. While I want to eat more, sometimes less is more in this case. And, this is good for those who are watching caloric intake.
  • Lightness. One of my favorite books of all times is "The Unbearable Lightness of Being." With Pringles, however, lightness is good. Pringles are not only light but also thin, and I think that this combination makes snacking on them feel less heavy, if this makes any sense at all to you. For some reason, I feel less guilt when eating light and thin chips than when munching on the really thick ones. Also, the lightness factor helps make these a bit less loud to eat, which I am sure your family members or colleagues will greatly appreciate.
  • Reasonable price. Yes, I will touch on the fact that the price seems very fair to me. In fact, the tin I got last night was just over $1.00. And, to think, you still can get all of this for $1.00 these days!

Old Pringles Commercial

Pringles Hate Okay, hate is a bit of a strong word here, but it aligns to the love-hate framework of this article. So, sorry Pringles! There are just a few things about you that I do not like:

  • The shape. I know, this is probably blasphemous as my guess is that Pringles prides itself on the shape. But, for me, the shape is just not convenient. The reason being, I cannot just pop a chip into my mouth. Part of this is due to the fact that I truly do have a smaller inner mouth than normal, as dental hygienists have told me for years when doing X-rays. The other part is that I am a Southern gal, and we are supposed to have some semblance of being lady-like, and shoving a whole Pringle, or three, into my mouth at one time just does not fit the bill. The problem then becomes what happens if you break the chip: due to its aforementioned lightness, it seems to shatter into little crumbs everywhere. It does not always make a clean break. This can also be challenging, especially if eating Pringles in the car on the way home from the grocery store.
  • Greasy feeling on roof of mouth. As much as I love a great Pringle, there is one slight issue when eating them. I get this weird slightly greasy feeling on the roof of my mouth (sorry to be redundant with the bullet title but not sure how else to describe this effect). It seems to occur no matter what flavor; however, if you drink lots of soda (how healthy) or water while consuming the Pringles, then this effect is minimized and quickly forgotten.
  • Tempting. Let's face it: Pringles are darn good. Due to all of the things I love about them, well they are sometimes hard to resist! And, if I am in diet mode, the temptation to overeat the Pringles may be too great. I find it safest not to have them on hand if dieting, even though Pringles offers really good light products as well.

Final analysis of the Pringles love-hate relationship After listing the pros and cons of Pringles and putting some thought into it, it's quite clear to me that my love-hate relationship with Pringles is mostly love. While every cloud has a silver lining, there are very few clouds when it comes to Pringles. These chips really do rock!

But focusing on action and self-improvement, I did address a couple of the negatives. First, I figured out a new way to eat the Pringles. If you pull out a small stack and hold them over a plate or small tupperware container, you can then snap them in half and let the big pieces and smaller crumbs just fall in there. Then you can take your container and grab that soda and just eat by picking out pieces of the broken chips. This method is also great for portion control as it takes more time to eat each bite this way.

Also, to address the tempting angle of Pringles, I will look forward to Pringles as the occasional treat but not as a staple in my diet. And, to get the full enjoyment, I will try to rotate flavors and give each one a chance.

I think the shape of the can may be a detriment. Once I get past the halfway point, my stubby fingers can't reach the chips! I am forced to tip the can, which usually results in the wearing of Pringle dust. All part of the Pringles experience, I guess.

I have a love-hate relationship too. I hate the way I can't stop eating them once I open the packet...

Very Good...does having a small mouth restrict a woman ability to complain and if so if there a dating service available that targets this desired breed?
