True Ghost Stories
78Ethereal Inspiration
First off, I need to give credit where it's due. This hub is inspired by MissJamieD's chilling hub, entitled, "Fun and True Ghost Stories."
Read about MissJamieD's eerie incidents here~
I think that many of us have had some kind of paranormal experience in our lives. I know that I sure have. It's not something I share with many people, though, as I'd sometimes rather prevent people from thinking that I'm either delusional or full of it.
After reading MissJamieD's writing, I have gained the courage to share a couple of my own slightly terrible and marginally chilling tales of ghostly encounters!

Shhh, Mom's Sleeping..
I was fifteen and I was sneaking back in to the house in the middle of the night. Again. My friend Jimi was with me, snickering quietly as I used more muscles than were necessary in my attempt to keep the old door from scraping the sagging frame as we crept into the front entry.
My mom's room sat immediately to the right of this little mudroom/foyer and there was no door going in to it - just an arched opening through which we could see right in to my mother's bed. I turned around to Jimi, giving her the one-finger "shush" signal. I pointed to the figure lying sideways on top of the covers. She was facing away from us and was curled up and breathing slowly so we were pretty certain she was still asleep. She wore a really conservative long, white nightgown, which didn't strike me as strange until I thought about it later (my mom is not a conservative dresser by any stretch).
We crept onward past the bedroom, through the living room, and in to the kitchen where we hoped to procure a few snacks before stealing up to my room to gab about the night's escapades. It was at that moment that the bathroom door (adjacent to the kitchen) swung open, bathing us in its bright, invasive light. There stood my mom, in short shorts and a spaghetti strap tank squinting at us and asking if we had just gotten in.
Jimi and I looked at eachother with equivalent looks of puzzlement on each of our faces. A strange mix of terror, curiosity, and disbelief welled up in me until it finally settled in my throat where it sat like a lump of unswallowed food.
We scurried back to peer into mom's room, seeing her empty bed and nothing else of note. Neither of us could get over what we saw and we scoured the house looking for the mystery woman. We even went through the yard and walked around the block searching for this nightgowned spectre.
We never found her but have since become more enlightened about the house and why some of its previous occupants have never moved out.
Just Dropping In
Probably two years after the above event occurred, my mom had moved out and my dad (they are not a couple) moved in. One day, shortly after this changeover, our neighbor stopped by and asked sheepishly if we had ever had any strange experiences in the house.
My dad told her that we had not and she left, probably feeling pretty dumb.
Well, later I found her in the back yard and decided to see if she'd clue me in as to why she would ask such a thing. I didn't feel like telling her about my experience yet - I kind of wanted to test the waters first.
Some light conversation primed us each to open up a little more to eachother and she began to tell me of the terrifying events that happened to her in MY house during her childhood.
(A teeny bit of backstory is needed at this point. The house was converted into a duplex many years ago. This neighbor was living in the other side of the duplex at the time of this story but lived in my side for much of her childhood.)
She proceeded to tell me about one recurring event which I found (and still find) particularly frightening. As a girl, she slept in the northernmost upstairs room - MY ROOM! - and would wake in the night, screaming for her parents. Her parents would come, she would tell them what she had just seen and they would stroke her hair and tell her to go back to sleep and that it was just a bad dream.
But she knew better. More often than not, after my neighbor had settled into her child's bed in her cozy little room, she would look up toward the ceiling to see the sickeningly familiar image of a mans face and shoulders hanging upside down from the attic entry and looking directly at her. The man never varied from this routine. He never came any closer to her and he often smiled at her. Still, as you can imagine, she was horrified.
As I listened to her story, I had to hold back the feeling of fright that began to perceptibly widen my eyes and dry out my mouth. There was, in fact, a strange square opening in the ceiling of my bedroom upstairs. I guessed it went into the attic, but didn't care to look since it kind of gave me the creeps. The opening, since I had moved in, had always been covered with a piece of sheet metal that was screwed down about every inch along the entire perimeter of the opening. Oh goody, couldn't wait to nestle into bed that night I tell ya!
Shortly after this, I moved out on my own and pushed these (and the many other experiences I had at this house) to the back of my mind and went out and lived my life. Now, though, my dad has purchased the house and in the process of procuring a loan has learned a lot of very interesting things about the house which is now a part of our family.

I look forward to reading your ghostly hub come October..... :)
I've already a couple of paranormal novels I'm working on, posted through HubPages. ;) You might enjoy, or might not, depending. Its a mix of parody, horror, ghost busters, and robot chicken.

AEvans- I'm flattered, and yes I definitely won the bedroom lottery in this case! :)
I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for more! Hurry, I'm dying here....
Great writing style!
Thanks RKHenry, for the encouragement & for reading. I'm so happy you enjoyed & since you did I'll continue the tales as soon as I'm done w/ my homework. :)

What fun hubs! I love your ghost stories!!! Great writing too. I must become a fan. :-)
KD Clement~ Yay! Lucky me - thank you so much! I'm so glad you like it.
Yikes Rai ! I loved the story......had me on the edge of my seat. The visit to go and see your dad is now canceled (ha ha).
I had someone call my name on Monday morning. I was sleeping and it was about 4:00 a.m.. I distinctly heard someone very cleary say " Ciiinnndddyyyy"....."ciiiinnnddddyyy". I woke and nobody was there. This has happened to me twice now. Strange.
Cindy
Hi!! So glad u read & liked- THANK U!!
Jeepers- that's freaky!! Don't you think its interesting given the dear ones we've lost recently...do you think it is one of them?
I'll keep in touch - glad you found me :)
Hi R - I just love your hub. So much creativity. It inspires me. I do think it was someone in the family. I remember thinking it sounded familiar....but can't pin point it. Both times they were in the wee hours of the morning. Do you think there is some semi-open time in the late night moring were it is easier to be heard or felt? Or maybe our brains start to rapid fire at a certain time during R.E.M..?
Big hug...
Cindy
OMG Just dropping in is so freaky and scary, gave me goosebumps - no kidding! I think I'm gonna have nightmares now and dream about dudes hanging off from the ceiling and smiling at me! Anyone have any idea how to beat them? I'm thinking of hitting him with a shoe...
I look forward to reading more of this, you are really good!
Bookworm
I'mmabookworm, I thank you kindly! Freaky indeed!!! Yeah, I'm trying to get my hands on one of those guns they had in "Ghostbusters":)
So glad you enjoyed - I'm a fan of your scary story as well :D
Thanks means alot, I think I have a friend that might be able to help us out with those guns...
It'll be like"Mwah ha ha ha ha! I've created a miracle!" and we just grab the guns and shoot the ceilings of our bedroom off when we see a dude smiling at us, turns out it's probably just the bedroom light, ooops...
Your fan,
Worm
Oh, the fun we could have - and the property we would destroy! :)
Yup, no one will have any use for builders, we could just destory everything! We'll be Ghostbusters/Builders!
The GHOSTDERS! Haha...:D
Worm (Who dreams about blasting the ceiling off!)
Worm, I think there may be a hub in the works here chronicling our adventures/antics.. :) (fictional, of course - so far..)
Ahhh good idea Roo, it'll be such a laugh! Why don't we try it? You start by writing the first adventure and I'll continue it off there! Of course it will take careful planning so we'll talk more before we put this plan to action! Good thought, we will work on it!
Worm
I like it, Worm! We'll talk further on this..
Most definetly!
Worm
Awesome! When I hubbed about one of my paranormal experiences last year, I thought I would be ridiculed. I was amazed and relieved to find that a lot of people believed me! Now I have to go read your sequel!
Yeah, I wondered that as well but these folks on here are a pretty supportive bunch for the most part.
I'm thrilled that you came to read my hub AND that you're going to read another. I hear jackalopes are not easily amused (or is it that they are, can't recall...?) :)
RooBee, I always loved ghost stories, It must be the adrenalin rush. I am looking forward to finding more as I read your hubs. Thanks for the spooky tale, it has kept me on the edge of my seat. :-)

Good story and nicely written - The guy hanging from the attic gave me the chills! I'm on to part two...
Hi Bryan, thanks so much for your compliments. Tis chilling, indeed! :)
I have to wonder, RooBee, if that first ghost may have been the haunting guilt you felt for staying out too late. Could that be it young lady?
Hey, puppascott - glad to see you! Oh, I never felt guilty back then! :D Thanks for coming by for a scare.
Did you freak out.. Spooky experience.... I believe in Paranormal occurences.
I did freak out a little! Thanks, Jon, for reading and commenting!
You're welcome.
There are unexplained things in our world that take place and I too have experienced this phenomenon several times. Good story. Now I will read the next one. thanks dear

Love your use of words. =)
Ghosts and ghoulies are no strangers to me, either. Thanks for sharing with us your ghost stories. =) I suppose I'll do a Hub on it during October...
