Assateague Island

Okay ladies and gents, close your eyes and picture this, oh wait!! don't do that, how are you going to read what I wrote if you do.. geez. Close them after you've read this:-)

The sun has yet to rise, but you know it's close. There is still a bit of chill in the air, tempting you to snuggle down in your sleeping bag for just a few minutes more, but you know what awaits so you wipe the sleep from your eyes and make your way out of your tent. The sand is cool beneath your feet as you stumble to the coffee pot for some much needed morning nectar. After a few minutes the smell of brewing coffee permeates the air waking those last few stubborn brain cells. The world is still quiet, you are the only one up and around. Grabbing your cup of coffee and a blanket you head over the dunes to the beach.

While sitting there enjoying ocean breeze a herd of wild horses come racing down the beach. As if sensing your presence and wanting to show off a  bit, they stop near you and begin frolicking in the surf. The little ones even daring to jump a shallow wave or two.

While you're watching this delightful display you notice the world is getting lighter. You gaze up at the sky and can see the orange of the sun just over the horizen. As it climbs a little higher you can begin to see the pinks, purples and oranges mixing together making for a breathtaking view.

With the comming of the sun, the horses go off to feed. Do not fret , you are in for yet another delight. Just past the second breaker you can see dolphins feeding and playing without a care in the world. As you are watching them you notice the water itself. It looks like someone threw handfuls of diamonds upon the surface. The sparkles seem to wink at you, as if to invite you in to play too. You can't help yourself, you get up and run to the edge, just enough to wet your toes.. BRRRRR..  Well that certainly got your blood going!!

Not yet ready to head back to camp you decide to wander down the beach , keeping your eyes out for colorful shells and of course the occasional jelly fish. After filling all possible pockets full of shells and other neat finds you head back to camp where the world has come to life and you hear the murmers of good morning from your fellow campers.

This is just the first hour of your day.. can you imagine what the rest of the day has to offer??

I have wittnessed this view every year for the last 6 years on a beautiful island called Assateague Island. It's a wild horse preserve near Ocean City Maryland. Check it out, I promise you, it's something you have to witness in person.

It sounds so perfect... I really thought you were talking about an imaginary place. What a delight it must be to have that view every day.
