My Complicated Opinion of John Mayer
56The Man Can Definitly Play a Guitar
I wish he would get less popular
I think that I have figured out my opinion of John Mayer, and it took me a while. Before I go into it, here is a brief summary of my John Mayer opinions.
I first hear of John Mayer with "Your Body is a Wonderland" I hate it and decide he produces girl music that I will never find appealing.
I hear "Daughters" and although also a girl song, it really is a solid song, especially since I started playing guitar and learned to appreciate his originality a little more.
I work at CVS and hear "Daughters" 8 million times. I learn to hate it and soon resent John Mayer once again.
Never consider buying Heavier Things and never knew about the first album at this point.
I wasn't even aware of the first John Mayer Trio album, but my sister loved Continuum and convinced me to give it a chance. I listened to the album and enjoyed it, especially one song, "Vultures."
After a few more times listening to the album, I lot all interest in it, except for like 3 songs in it.
Tonight, I watch The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien and see John Mayer Trio play and hugely enjoy it.
SO, how I figure it, after all this exposure and years of changing opinions, I can like John Mayer. It is just going to take some effort on his part. Sometimes he puts out pop albums and those generally have a few good songs and the rest is very unappealing. However, sometimes, this new album included, he puts out a very quality album, based around blues and lots of difficult guitar work. Mayer is one of those guys that knows how to put a song into a space that sounds perfect for the song, and yet still amaze you with the complexity of the whole thing.
I need John Mayer to get less popular, so that he stops making pop albums and focuses on his guitar and blues work more, if that happens, I can easily see myself becoming a huge fan.
