My dad is on Facebook.
54Obviously times have changed. My dad has a Facebook page. And my dog has a Myspace page. No, really.

I refuse to partake in Myspace and the drama that goes along with that. I deleted my account after friends would send me messages telling me to look at comments that new girls had left on their exes pages. Myspying we called it. It's a disgusting thing.Therefor my dog has an incognito profile of which I can go unnoticed and still puruse the great music interface Myspace has set up. I switched to Facebook because social networking is still fun and I like the friend updates. But more and more I'm having old college friends I haven't seen in years add me as well as clients I barely know. I'm so guarded with the information I let out online because not only will my dad see it, but producers I work with and "friends" I no longer know but would feel rude to deny their friendship request. If you tag a picture of me taking a shot of tequila (not that I would do that), I'm going to take it down. And if you want to know if I have a boyfriend then ask me. I'm not going to wear that on my sleeve and if something should happen have the broken-hearted "Rachael is now listed as single" message.
Social networking is a wonder because it lets you control the content that you want to put out there for a wide network to see. Yet, people forget this and put all kinds of craziness out there. Privacy is ripped away and if I do not think twice about putting "Rachael had one two many drinks last night" as my update then all 148 (very close, obviously) friends know exactly what I was up to the night before and that I obviously do not know the difference between "two" and "too".
Facebook is still not quite as immature as Myspace. It seems to be attracting an older audience. Hence, my dad. Oh, this is important, too. When I say "my dad" I mean my dads. Both my father and my step-dad are on facebook. My 13-year-old brother, however, is still passing along chain letters on Myspace. (I know this because he and Paco are friends.) Because of this older audience you don't feel quite as inclined to comment relentlessly on friend's pages (or write on their walls as in this case.) Plus, playing online Scrabble is a huge draw.
So I have decided that until my younger brother caves into the impending force that is Facebook, or I have yet another ex add me as a friend I shall continue my meager existence as a social networking fly on the wall.
