My how Dancing has changed!
54What's a "Booty-Do?"
The mash potato, the twist, the monkey, the running man, the push it, the hammer type-writer, the swim, the butt. What are these?
They are dances. At least they were. I was not around when most of these were popular, but I remember when I was a kid seeing my mom and my older cousins reliving the good old days with these old days. It all looked so innocent and fun.
Dancing today looks nothing like that. I watched my thirteen year old, my thirteen year old niece, my six year old son, and my nine year old niece as they listen to music and danced along. What they were doing was called the "stanky leg" and then they moved on to something called the "booty-do".
What in the world is a booty do? From the looks of it, it seems that dancing has taken a whole new flavor. There is so much more a sexual element in what the kids are doing now. The dances are more provocative. The music they dance to has no meaning. It's just move like this. Move like that. Shake this and drop that.
I can't keep up! Even my friends are getting into the action. There is too much sex in the movements for me. I can't take it!
After about five minutes of watching these kids shake and grind with every inch of their little bodies, I changed the radio station to an all blues station. I had to get a healthy dose of music that reminded me of what the craft was all about. I needed to hear some grown folks music.
Can somebody out there tell me what happened to all the good music and the dances that went along with them?

Instead of progressing and evolving - this country started 'devolving' - it is reflected in the quality of our lives - the junk food, the junk politicians, the junk military conflict, the low-paying junk jobs, junk music, movies, tv, etc. and with devolving, you don't stop until you hit rock bottom - we have.
Now we will begin to evolve and progress once again. Our standards will go up and we will start to demand 'better.'
Feline Prophet- I can see so much of what you are saying evidenced in everything that the kids today do. They are less inhibited and more open about anything and everything. I just try my best to teach my kids and all the kids that I come in contact with that sometimes the things that they see other kids doing is not the best choice for them. I don't have a fit over dances, but I do try and make sure that the kids know how to conduct themselves.
BK- You are so RIGHT!!! This country hit rock bottom when our children started idolizing stars that show no restraint in their lifestyles. They treat sex like a day at the amusement park, and the kids want to mimic their attitdues. I just hope that you are right about the evolving part, too. We need more structure for our kids. Teaching your kids one set of values at home is becoming a mute point when they learn a whole other set when they are out and about.
Thanks for your comments.

What has changed - the acceptance of sex. Constantly being told that sex sells and people who are willing to put the sex in entertainment. My students always want to show me the latest dance. I watch and even try to learn the dance (or bawk that I am to old). I told my students they took the spank and made it nasty!
I know what you mean. Even the electric slide has gotten an extreme make-over. My daughter went to a party at her school for Valentine's day, and she said that she had to leave the dance floor because the dances were to sexual for her.

Everything evolves....or does it? As one who can't manage much more than an almost stationary shuffle I must admit that some of the dancing today leaves my eyes popping! I think perhaps kids today have less inhibitions in everything they do.
