Cell Phones For Your Kids

It is my Daughters 9th Birthday tomorrow and she wants a cell phone, We have got her one but we had to take alot into consideration before we found the right one.

Bluetooth - We decided against Bluetooth, feeling that if it was left turned on she could recieve inapropriate messages from people she doesn't know.

Internet - We allowed internet access, although it is limited with filters,

Camera - This is one of the main features she has asked for, we allowed it but, we will monitor them carefully.

As a parent, these are the 3 main concerns, the way the world is today you cannot be too careful, but you can't wrap them in cotton wool either, you have to give them a little independence, we will monitor who she has called and who has called her.

The phone we eventually choose was pink, had a camera and internet access, and it also had an mp3 player built in the internet access is restricted and I hope she will be happy with it.

Wow, such generous parents. :-) But I know that cell phones are truly becoming "must-haves" among all age groups. That's great that you were able to install safeguards and that you've committed to monitoring its use to protect her against predators.

I hear a lot of parents talk about getting a mobile phone for their kids. I'm less concerned about someone hacking bluetooth, or what sites they'll visit, but I am concerned that they use it appropriately. For example, texting in class, talking when you should be playing, having the wringer go off during a quiet time etc. All things a child is bound to make a mistake to two with....at least my kids are. Is this an acceptable risk for a child to take a cell phone to school.

Happy Birthday to your daugther! Very nice gift.

I've been cell-less for almost 3 months now, since moving back to the Bay Area from Texas... it's almost liberating. But I'm sure I'll have one again soon enough...

Thank God my daughters are still too young to care about cell phones! There is one feature that you didn't mention that I am certainly going to have in my kids' phones; GPS tracking devices. Also, and I always thought this was silly but I do it anyway, my mom always told me to keep the key tones shut off on my cell so that if someone is holding me against my will I can try to place a call or text without their knowledge.

Sounds like you've taken a lot into consideration before getting the cell for your daughter - good to see. Hope the new item suits its purpose. We got a cell for my youngest son while he was a teen. He took to disappearing, sometimes for days at a time so at least we had a link to him (once he agreed to start answering our calls!) so we could rest assured he was ok.

Cheers, Don

Great article!

The 14 year old girl who lives in the flat about mine got a new cell for her bday. She said her previous one was 4 years old. 10 years old with a cell sounded strange to me - but now I think they're good things for a kid to have, especially in emergencies. Direct line to the parents or police!

Have you seen the ones they have for small children, they have only a few buttons you can program "mommy" and "daddy"? Very cute!
