What a Professional Does About Fleas

I received a distress call from one of my clients at the grooming shop. These people have a couple of dogs and wanted my professional help with what was described to me as a "flea problem". My client wanted know how to get rid of fleas and needed a good dog flea killer.

We've all seen fleas. You know the pesky little fells, they get on your dog and make him scratch until you just want to scream. Fleas are sometimes hard to see on a dog. Fleas like to hide

  • under the tummy
  • near the tail
  • under mats
  • below the ears

Usually when someone calls complaining of fleas, it just means they have seen a flea and don't want to get the trouble started in the house. Flea spray for the house is usually a good dog flea killer.

That wasn't the case with this dog. This dog did have fleas. Lots of fleas. How to get rid of all these fleas?

I carried him into the grooming shop to give him a bath so I could see what was going on. I didn't recognize the dog and didn't think I had worked with him before. The dog I know is white this dog was nearly brown.

You will be able to see in this video when I started applying water to the dog all the blood (oh yeah, people call this "flea dirt"). Fleas were jumping! Fleas jumped from the tip of the dog's nose to his tail. Fleas were jumping into and onto the tub. Fleas were jumping on me!

  • I wet the dog with water then applied flea dip to slow the jumping fleas and kill a thousand or so. I let the flea dip, an instant dog flea killer, remain on the dog for about five minutes before I started the bath.

I felt sorry for the dog and wanted to relieve some of his itching so I started the bath process with

  • peroxide mix to sooth the skin. I gave the peroxide a little time to work
  • applied shampoo. I had to shampoo this dog a number of times, maybe five or more before I could remove all the blood and odor.

Finally

  • applied more flea dip, thoroughly covering the dog
  • allowed him to air-dry

I expect these people to return in seven to 14 days for a re-dip (the dog will probably need more than one re-dip). I issue "complementary" re-dip cards for follow up care. How to get rid of fleas? This dog's owners should be at home treating everything in the house (this is a house dog), other pets, and their yard while the dog is in my shop receiving treatment.

One of my readers pointed out something I should have mentioned in this article. I don't feel any negative feelings towards this dog's owners. I feel like they are, very possibly, GOOD pet owners. You see, these people had an awful flea situation (which can happen over night), they were embarrased and upset. Even though they were ashamed they DID reach out for professional help to get the situation under control.

I can imagine what their house must look like. The owners don't deserve this dog. It is inhumane.

Well Vic,

I can kinda see your point but I don't agree with you about the owners. I am sure their house is awful! A bad case of fleas can happen over night. With the weather we have been having here in Oklahoma the fleas have been having a hayday!

I feel like these people did the right thing. They hung their heads and looked for professional help. They could have stuck the dog outside and hoped the fleas went away. The owners DID reach out for help. Since the owners were looking for help I feel differently about them than I would if they hadn't.

How's your puppies? Better after the recall thing? I've been praying for you!

I must say, while watching your video, I felt so sorry for the poor little thing. Why was the water so brown, was that blood from the fleas. It looks like they must have started a while ago. When you had finished with him, he looked like a brand new dog. Glad you were able to help him.

Justanice,

Yes, that was blood. The pet owners said they were in bad shape and needed me to come in on Saturday to help them out. They found him to be in this shape on Thursday.

Fleas CAN happen that fast. Just remember, the fleas spend the winter an spring breeding in your yard, under your porch, etc. This dog hadn't visited under the porch until it started to get hot.

Hi Susan:

Thank you for your reply. I guess I don't know enough about these fleas. Our babies are doing much better. Cookie is still recovering from the kidney and liver problems. She is on Denosyl, Marin and low levels of steroids. Denosyl and Marin are excellent supplements. She is eating Hill's Prescription Diet i/d and has already gained one pound (she normally weighs 12 lbs. and had lost 2). Thanks for your kind words and your informative hubs.

Poor dog.

I cried watching the video.

At least they came for help, but how many digs and cats are out there suffering terribly?

We have tried everthing to get rid of the fleas on our dogs and in our house and nothing is working..these must be super super fleas. They eat me up. We have fogged -and sprayed and sprayed and the dogs have frontline plus on them too..I have a lung condition and on oxygen so I have to be careful what is sprayed unless I am out of the house -and with the heat and humidity here in MO that can be impossible too.. any suggestions. Thanks Carla

Carla, First suggestion is to not use Frontline Plus. Frontline Plus has gone from a 90 day product to a 30 day or less product but this is not the problem with Fronline Plus. Fronline Plus is not a repellant. The bugs have to bite the dog or cat before the Frontline works on the bug. Advantix kills the bug soon after climbing onto the host, no bite is needed.

I suggest that you use Borax (20 Mule Team in the laundry section) on your floors, under your couch and in your pets' bedding. Borax will not effect your lung condition, sweatens your house and dehydrates the fleas. Sprinkle the Borax on the floor and leave it down at least a day. Under the sofa and chairs, where no one will be the wiser, leave the Borax until you move the furniture to vacuum next time. Be sure to treat the pets' bedding. This is the flea treatment used by many zoos and has been pretty effective in the home, too.

If you have a porch or stoop you can sprinkle Borax under do that, too.

My Mom lives in Mo. I know just what you mean about the weather.
