My dog has dry itchy skin. What can I do to help him stop scratching?
There can be a number of causes to itching and scratching. Most common causes are Corn in the diet and exposure to fleas.
- Check your dog for fleas
- Bathe your dog or take him to a professional groomer for a bath
- Use a deep cleaning shampoo to remove all dirt and sloughed skin.
- Wash twice with this shampoo.
- Wash with a moisturizing shampoo, washing once more. Oatmeal shampoos are helpful.
- Follow up with a moisturizing conditioner. Oatmeal shampoos and conditioners are available at pet supply stores.
- Rinse well between each shampoo and after applying the conditioner. Leaving the conditioner on your pet will only make the itching worse.
- Check the dog food contents for corn. Corn in a dog's diet can cause itching and skin irratations.
- Check the dog food contents for Soy. Soy in a dog's diet can cause itching and paw licking.
- Check the dog food contents for Wheat . Wheat in a dog's diet causes itching and scratching.
Should the itching and scratching continue you should check with your vet, groomer, or other pet care professional to find the cause.
Hint: Winter is a time of year when static electricity is high. Be sure and treat long haired pets so static electricity doesn't cause discomfort.

I have a basset hound/bulldog mix he's approx. 80 lbs. well exercised, groomed, bathed and maintained in general. I have applied 2 applications of Frontline in the the past 3 weeks, this was recommended by the vet. However he is still itching, and he does not have mange. I just feel he has allergies any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Chris,
Check your dog's food for Corn, Wheat, and Soy. These three grains will cause excessive itching and scratching. You will notice the coat has a "dog" smell and won't come clean. Head shaking and scratching at the ears could be part of the reaction as well. You will notice paw licking and butt biting, too. When you touch him he will feel warmer to you than what your body temp. is. All of these signs are an indication of grains in the diet.
Remove the grains and the itching will stop.
Susan
