Trying Out Opera

I love trying out new pieces of software - that’s probably why I have to wipe my laptop every six months or so. I’ve been relying on Firefox as my main browser for a few years, but when Opera became free, I decided to give it a whirl. There were lots of features I really liked, built-in right from the start. The ability to easily save a snippet of web text to a note has been my most used feature. I also like the labels on my mail and the ‘go to URL’ option, which allows me to navigate to a web page that’s referenced in plain text. The browser is light and speedy and the ability to set options for how and when you view images can speed the browser up even more. I also liked being able to rearrange my tabs easily. No doubt about it, Opera has a lot of great features and I can see why people swear by it.

Going Back To Firefox

So why did I go back to Firefox? It’s like this. Not all sites love Opera, which is mostly their problem, unless I want to do something on the site, when it becomes my problem. For instance, I could never complete a signup using Opera. There was always an error message or something it didn’t recognise. So I couldn’t sign up for this site, or any of the article sites I submit to. In some cases I couldn’t submit material. Once I’d signed up it all worked fine, but I got tired of having to switch browsers for every signup. In the end, I was switching back to Firefox so often during an internet session that Opera just didn’t make sense any more.

Extending Firefox

I started using Firefox whe it was still in beta and even then they knocked the socks off Internet Explorer (boo hiss). Firefox can be configured to your needs via the ever growing range of extensions and can satisfy the eye through a large collection of themes. Favourite extensions for Firefox are Scrapbook, which allows you to save information via a right click menu, SessionSaver, which allows the browser to remember the pages you were browsing when you shut it down and CustomizeGoogle. Every couple of weeks I find new ways to get more from Firefox. That's why it's my favorite browser - and that's not likely to change.

Firefox is the bee's knees. I have a portable version on my USB key. That comes in sooo handy at the library or when visting frriends.

Opera had 'em all beat in the early '90s, yet I feel that it is destined to become the Betamax of web browsers.

Cheers,

Mitch

Portable Firefox is indeed a useful piece of software, Mitch - maybe you should write a hub or blog post on using and configuring it. :)

I love Firefox as well. Mitch's tip about putting it on a USB key is one that I will try.
