Myths About Running an Online Business at Home
56It may not be everything you thought it would be
Article from www.mommygaga.net
Thought running a home business would be easy? Think again! It is actually more difficult when you run the whole operation. Do you have what it takes? Read the common myths below and see if you've got it!
No Knowledge Is Required to Start an Online Business
Another false claim which makes people think online business is easy and anyone can do it (see “Anyone Can Do It, It’s Easy” above). Any business owner would agree that knowledge in your specific field is necessary to make it work. How can you sell cars if you don’t know anything about them? How can you give online advice about pregnancy if you have never studied pregnancy or been pregnant? How can you start an website if you have never researched it? Knowledge is required to be successful.
I Can Be an Overnight Success
Please do not believe these “Get Rich Quick Schemes” as they have been proven time and time again NOT to work! If you see something that promises $2000 a week with part-time effort, think to yourself “Hmmm… is this realistic?” and RUN!
Anyone Can Do It, It’s Easy
Not true. It is NOT easy, and anyone cannot do it. Setting up your site is probably the most lengthly process, followed by researching information and marketing. Then there is upkeep to be done to keep your site fresh and exciting. Hours and hours are spent and some days, you may look back and ask yourself “What did I just accomplish?” In reality, establishing an internet business is a long, gut wrenching process. You will read and hear tons of advice from many different sources that all seem to conflict. At the end of the day, most people give it up. It is a hard and overwhelming task and everyone does not have what it takes to get through this.
When My Site is Finished, the Money will Come Rolling In
Good luck with that one. People must know that your website exists before they can view it, let alone click through or buy anything from it. You have to actually submit your site to search engines to let them know that you exist (which can take weeks) and get the keywords right on your website to hopefully get indexed on those search engines. Then, you have to figure out how you want to market your site. Paid Advertising? Ezine Publishing? Google Ads? Local Papers? Blogging? Other Forums? Some of these are free, while others can end up costing a pretty penny.
I Can Market My Business Free Online
Another false assumption. Marketing an online business is pretty much the same as marketing a normal business. It requires time, and yes, money. The question is, how much are you willing to spend?
After Initial Set-up, I’ll Put My Site on Autopilot
How would it be possible to set up a business which will run by itself and make you money without human intervention at all to maintain it? If you are selling a product, your must deal with the customer and the actual product itself. If you are using another money making strategy, you have got to stay on top and promote the best stuff out there. You can definitely put your business on autopilot, but someone will be there to out do you in a heartbeat with new content and ideas that take your visitors away and direct them to their site. Suddenly you are trailing in the race.
I Can Do Everything Online
Up to a certain point, you can do everything online. Once you get into a relationship with a customer or a networking partner, you must solidify it and make it a real life relationship offline. You do have to get on the phone and actually talk to some of these people.
I Can Just Follow the Experts
All businesses are different and require different methods to be successful. Don’t take what people say for granted. You still have to find your own course to follow before you can take off.
I Will Be Able to Quit My Day Job
Don’t let your job go yet! It takes time, actually even months to see a profit from a website. In the beginning stages, you will be spending more time putting money into your business than you will be making out of it.
I Can Set My Own Hours and Work Less Than My Regular Day Job
Not true. You may have to put more hours into your own business. Much time is spent on set up, upkeep and marketing, where upkeep and marketing are considered on-going tasks. Most successful businesses have different people working the various aspects of the business or have individual departments for all of their needs, such as Customer Service, Sales, Marketing, Accounting, IT and the list goes on. You will actually be the one doing ALL of this.
I Will Be Able to Spend as Much Time with the Kids as I Want
You are still running a business. Like any business, an internet business requires daily upkeep. There may be times that you will have to shut out the kids and get that writing done for this weeks’ article or blog. You may have to email and even get on the phone with your customers or networking partners (without the distractions of screaming children). It may take you 3 hours to revamp that page you have been looking to change for weeks. Whatever the case, you need time, and I mean time to yourself to keep your internet business running and successful.
