NATARAJ : ' THE COSMIC DANCER '
63
The strong symbol of ‘Natraj' (Lord Shiva) adopted by CERN at the site of LHC is by now familiar. The figure of Natraj is often shown dancing enclosed in a burning circle. The burning circle represents the cosmic energy Natraj creates and channels. His energy and enthusiasm are said to destroy the old and create new life. His dance is said to represent the energy and life cycle of the universe. It is said that, Natraj's dance is the energy that keeps the universe running, and that if he ever stops dancing the universe will cease to exist. He is standing on top of a demon, to show that he has the power to conquer evil and spiritual ignorance. He is usually represented in one of three forms: As ‘Nataraj' in a dance pose, as a ‘Lingam' (phallus) or as an ‘Anthropomorphic' form. According to the press, Author Fritjof Capra first drew a parallel between Shiva's dance of creation and desecration and the dance of subatomic Particles in The Tao of Physics. Capra's quotes, "For modern physicists Shiva's dance is the dance of sub-atomic matter".
I must mention here, the temple town of Chitambaram, situated in South of India, is the home of Dancing Shiva (Nataraj), where he performed Ananda Thandava (dance of the eternal bliss). The temple is supposed to be located at the 'Lotus Heart of the Universe'. Every Bharatnatyam (the traditional dance from South India) dancer as a tradition takes the blessings of Nataraj before performing on the stage.
