Where to find NCCI codes....

Are you looking for NCCI class codes? Help locating proper NCCI codes can be a chore especially if you are not in the insurance business.

NCCI or the National Council on Compensation Insurance is an independent rate and advisory authority physically located in Boca Raton Florida. The workers compensation data and rate producing mechanism of NCCI is instrumental in the world of workers compensation in this country. The workers compensation statistical information they gather is used by most member insurance companies when it comes to establishing rates for workers comp in each participating state. Because NCCI is a private company any information that you seek from them is provided at a cost. They sell most of their services to anyone who will pay the price and when it comes to trying to locate NCCI codes the authority guide, which is owned and copyright protected by NCCI, is the "scopes manual." The Scopes Manual is available to anyone who buys a subscription which is somewhat costly.

The workers comp code of secrecy...

Well, there's really not a code of secrecy, but sometimes it may seem like it! Especially when an employer or business owner is looking for help with a NCCI class code problem. Think about it...when would a business owner need to look up a NCCI class code? I bet it's only when they are experiencing a problem. That problem more than likely occurs when an employer or business owner feels their business has been improperly classified and believes the application of a different class code would translate into a lower premium. So who could blame them, who wouldn't want to pay a lower premium!

Unfortunately, the proper application of workers comp class codes to the operation of a business can be quite complicated and difficult at best. Notice I mentioned the terms "proper application." As an experienced workers compensation consultant, over the years I've reviewed many workers compensation policies and have made many corrections due to the miss-application of NCCI class codes, saving employers many thousands of dollars.

So yes, class code mistakes do happen, maybe more frequently than you'd expect. And from a business owners stand point, maybe seems there is a shroud of secrecy in place when it comes to NCCI codes.

Sources for help with NCCI class codes....

Finding the codes and making proper interpretations of the codes is two different things. But if you are still looking for the codes and still need help with a class code problem here's a few places you should check:

  • Check with a workers comp consultant. They have experience in working with NCCI codes and can help you with proper classification of your business. Workers Compensation Consultants is a good firm with folks that can help guide you in the right direction.
  • Contact NCCI direct. While many of their services are provided only at a cost, they remain a great resource for information.
  • What about that insurance agent who set up your workers comp policy? It always amazes me the number of clients I hear from who don't contact their agent. Maybe it's because they are the source of the mistake in the first place...to be discussed later.
  • Contact your state workers comp authority.

Summary...

In this hub I've provided you with some resources for finding help with NCCI class codes. If you are an employer of business owner please remember, finding the codes and making the proper application of the codes to your business are two different things. The proper interpretation of NCCI class codes is an art. Miss-application of these codes can lead to many thousands of dollars in overpaid workers compensation premiums.

Hope this helps. Thanks!
