Fantasy Football Sleepers 2009

NFL Fantasy Football Sleepers 2009

As another new NFL season begins therein lies the beginning of something equally as exciting and important - the NFL Fantasy Football Draft.

You're on the clock.

Who are the surprises going to be on this upcoming 2009 NFL fantasy football season?

There are a number of ways a fantasy football sleeper pick can come around:

1.) They could be a Rookie in the league and no one really knows what to expect from them. They could have been great in college and put up impressive numbers, but who knows how that is going to translate to the NFL game? Matt Ryan owners really benefited by taking a risk and drafting the Boston College product.

2.) They could have switched teams via free agency or being traded. Some guys are just on a plain bad team, but once they are surrounded by other good players, this inspires their game and they end up having good seasons. Wes Welker a couple of seasons ago BLEW up when he left Miami and had gone to the New England Patriots.

3.) Injuries to once starting players opens up possibilities for back-ups and some take full advantage of this. Michael Turner is a great example of spot duty on the San Diego Chargers when L.T. would be nicked up. Or Earnest Graham on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when Cadillac Williams got injured on the Bucs two seasons ago.

Now without further ado here is my list for possible fantasy football sleepers in no particular order

NFL Fantasy Football Sleepers in 2009.

(check it out here for the absolute top nfl fantasy football quarterbacks for 2009)

Fred Jackson RB - Buffalo Bills

I know all of the hoopla that has surrounded T.O. being with the Buffalo Bills, lost is the running back position. With Marshawn Lynch being suspended the first 3 games of the NFL season you are sure to get value out of Fred Jackson.

Tony Gonzalez TE - Atlanta Falcons

Tony Gonzalez was the product of being on a bad team last season with the Kansas City Chiefs. Now being on the up and coming Atlanta Falcons with stud QB Matt Ryan and bruising RB Michael Turner, this is almost a no-brainer and Gonzalez will be one of the top TE's in the league this year.

Felix Jones RB - Dallas Cowboys

An injury-shorten season last year for Felix Jones prevented him from having a possible Rookie-of-the-year status. With him sharing carries with Marion Barber, and returning kick-offs and punts, you can have multiple streams of fantasy points with this guy.

Chad Ochocino WR - Cincinnati Bengals

With a healthy Carson Palmer throwing the ball, the receiver formerly known as Chad Johnson is the #1 receiver on the team, especially after losing T.J. Houshmandzadeh. The Bengals did pick up Laveranues Coles during the off season but Ochocino is still you're man in Cincy.

Percy Harvin WR - Minnesota Vikings

Mercy Percy will be on a team that features Adrian Peterson, Brett Favre, and a stellar defensive team. He will be Brett Favre's favorite new target and should serve some time as a kick returner. Barring any injuries you should get good fantasy value from Percy Harvin.

Knowshon Moreno RB - Denver Broncos

This rookie could be a starter before you know it and he will be a good support running and catching out of the backfield. He could be last year's Matt Forte from the Chicago Bears.

Steve Slaton RB - Houston Texans

Slaton had a decent Rookie campaign last year so he might fly under the radar again this year and good a solid pick-up.

Mark Sanchez QB - New York Jets

The former USC standout seems poised to be named the starting QB when the regular season begins. He could fall in the class of Joe Flacco more so than Matt Ryan of last year, but he should be a solid QB if you're looking for a backup during the season.

Ted Ginn Jr. WR - Miami Dolphins

Tedd Ginn might finally be learning to run routes and be an actual receiver to compliment his great speed. That along with his returning skills he could make for good value.

Domenik Hixon WR - New York Giants

With the Giants Plaxico Burress being out of the team, Eli Manning is going to need someone to throw to. He is quietly the Giants #1 receiver.

Darrius Heyward-Bey WR - Oakland Raiders

He is slated be a starter and could turn some heads as the Raiders aren't expected to do much this season.

Well, that is my list of sleepers. I may update with some more as preseason football continues and see if anyone else stands out or if any other injuries transpire. So hopefully this will help you in your drafts. Please feel free to leave comments if you have any you like to suggest.

dude I completely agree with Mark Sanchez, I think he will have a year similar to Matt Ryan last year

yeah i think he has his head on straight and is a hard worker. I am so disappointed the Buc's (my team) wasted their pick on Josh Freeman! I would have picked up a Percy Harvin or some stud Defensive player and get someone good next year, i.e. Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy.

I was pretty upset when we lost Derrick Ward to you guys (wind portion of the trio Earth, Wind, and Fire) but he deserved a huge payout that we could not afford to give him.

I know I'm bias, but Ramses Barden of the Giants wouldn't be a bad choice either as a sleeper! Otherwise, I really like Ted Ginn Jr. If I know Parcells, he's got more control over the Fins than what many people are aware of and so will get him in the mix.

Great hub, congrats again, and get your popcorn ready!!! I look forward to hearing from you!

Derrick Ward was one of the FEW decent moves done by the Bucs in the offseason. Other than that, I don't have much good to say about the Bucs. Good luck to your team when the season starts. I believe we play each other, and I am sure your team will kill us :)

Dont know about slaton being a huge sleeper this year, I think he's a second round pickup easy. I had a feeling about sanchez too, but baltimore is eating his lunch for him right now, I cant believe the line is only 3 on that game. I like your Felix Jones pick though. He is being taken late 12-13 rounds, he's got that big play talent you cant pass up. Nice hub.

Yeah I figured Sanchez would have a tough time against the Ravens. But I just checked his stats for the game 3 for 8, 1td isn't TOO bad. Felix Jones is an explosive player and is definitely good sleeper material. Thanks.

Tony Gonzalez is not a sleeper! He is the first tight end off the board. Typically a fourth round pick.

You're correct about Tony Gonzalez, just getting awareness out for him (even though he probably doesn't need it) that he is in for a big year.

I actually had Felix last year and he got me quite a few points before he got hurt.

I did take Harvin this year and the fact they ran he wildcat on Monday night gives me hope he will be a ball handler in the offense his first year out.

Hey Bengriston:

Good pick-up on Felix Jones last year. With all of the hype surrounding Darren McFadden, he was kinda lost in the shuffle.

I think Harvin will play a big role if he stays injury-free.

With returns, wildcat formations, wide receiver - he can be the jack of all trades.

Harvin can turn out to be a huge pick as seen today , the guy is just a playmaker

Yeah I absolutely love Harvin's game, as long as he stays injury-free he should be solid.
