NFL's Unbeatens

After the Viking's loss to the Steelers earlier this week, there are only three undefeated teams left in the NFL. The Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, and New Orleans Saint are the powerhouses still standing. Actually, this is the first time three teams have been undefeated entering Week Eight. I will go over each of these teams' schedules and determine the percentage chance that they will go undefeated...

Denver Broncos (6-0)

W vs. Cincinnati 12-7

W vs. Cleveland 27-6

W vs. Oakland 23-3

W vs. Dallas 17-10

W vs. New England 20-17 (OT)

W vs. San Diego 34-23

The Broncos are the biggest surprise so far this season. Nobody expected them to do well after getting a new coach, trading their star quarterback, and having problems with their star receiver. From what the Broncos have shown, they win big over all the low-quality teams such as the Browns and Raiders. However, they've played all the other teams pretty close. They needed overtime to beat the Patriots and they were rescued by a last-second miracle catch by Brandon Stokley to beat the Bengals in their first game. They might be good in the clutch, but they can't allow so many games to come down to the last minute if they want to remain unbeten. I don't think the Broncos have what it takes to go undefeated. Here's what's left for Denver...

Baltimore Ravens (3-3)--Chance of victory--40%

Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2)--COV--45%

Washington Redskins (2-5)--COV--85%

San Diego Chargers (3-3)--COV--65%

New York Giants (5-2)--COV--35%

Kansas City Chiefs (1-6)--COV--90%

Indianapolis Colts (6-0)--COV--40%

Oakland Raiders (2-5)--COV--85%

Philadelphia Eagles (4-2)--COV--55%

Kansas City Chiefs (1-6)--COV--90%

According to my calculations, Denver's chance of running the table is roughly 0.5%. That comes out to odds of 1 in 200. I feel very strongly that Denver will lose. In fact, I see them losing at least three games. They have many problem games. I don't see them beating the Ravens since the Ravens have lost three in a row. Ray Lewis is going to bring the Ravens together and force the defense to play as well as ever. If they do make it past Baltimore, they then have to play the rejuvenated, world champion Steelers. If somehow they make it past all these games, Denver has to play currently undefeated Colts. It's possible, but the odds are stacked heavily against the surprise Broncos to go undefeated.

Indianapolis Colts (6-0)

W vs. Jacksonville 14-12

W vs. Miami 27-23

W vs. Arizona 31-10

W vs. Seattle 34-17

W vs. Tennessee 31-9

W vs. St. Louis 42-6

The Colts have been a great team for many years now, but this was thought to be an off-year for them because of the retirement of long-time head coach Tony Dungy and pro-bowl wide receiver Marvin Harrison. However, the Colts have been flawless. They've played without their number two receiver Anthony Gonzalez, yet have thrown in young wideouts without absolutely no problems. The Colts' first two games were tight, but have dominated their last four games. They haven't really been challenged yet though. I don't think they will go undefeated because their defense isn't reliable enough. They barely escaped Miami's wildcat offense. Peyton Manning will give the Colts a chance to win every game, but he isn't even on the fieldĀ even half the game. It's just going to take one opposing quarterback having a great game to torch the Colts. Here's the rest of their schedule...

San Francisco 49ers (3-3)--COV--75%

Houston Texans (4-3)--COV--70%

New England Patriots (5-2)--COV--50%

Baltimore Ravens (3-3)--COV--55%

Houston Texans (4-3)--COV--70%

Tennessee Titans (0-6)--COV--85%

Denver Broncos (6-0)--COV--60%

Jacksonville Jaguars (3-3)--COV--70%

New York Jets (4-3)--COV--75%

Buffalo Bills (3-4)--COV--85%

Based on these percentages, the Colts have a 2.3% chance of going undefeated. That comes out to odds of 1 in 43. Even with Peyton Manning playing better than anyone in the NFL, the Colts will not likely go undefeated. However, they have a much better shot than the Broncos. I think the Patriots and Ravens will give the Colts the most problems. They also have the Broncos to deal with if they get that far. The Colts shoud beat every other team on their schedule, but the chances of beating them all is unlikely even if they beat the Patriots, Ravens, and Broncos. Personally, I don't think the Colts will beat New England. Tom Brady and his team are playing like the Pats of 2007. The Colts, even at their best, are not very successful in big games. If the Colts defense isn't playing out-of-their-mind football, then they won't stand much of a chance against the 5-2 Patriots. I'm crossing my fingers, but I doubt the Colts will hold off all challengers the rest of this season.

New Orleans Saints (6-0)

W vs. Detroit 45-27

W vs. Philadelphia 48-22

W vs. Buffalo 27-7

W vs. New York Jets 24-10

W vs. New York Giants 48-27

W vs. Miami 46-34

First off, the Saints look like the best team in the NFL. They haven't had one hiccup. The key to them being undefeated is their defense. Even when their offense isn't scoring points (extremely rare), Darren Sharper and the rest of the D is scoring. It's unlikely for any one team to be stellar on offense week-in and week-out. But if the Saints defense keeps up their play, the Saints have a pretty good shot at going undefeated. Besides, nobody has found a way to hault their passing game, and it doesn't look like any team is even close. Top-tier teams such as the Eagles and Giants have clearly look outmatched against the Saints. No team has had a chance with the exception of the Dolphins. The Dolphins had a large lead that was quickly erased by the Saints' potent offense and timely defense. New Orleans has too much fire power for just about any defense. They could very well go undefeated. Here's who are standing in their way...

Atlanta Falcons (4-2)--COV--70%

Carolina Panthers (2-4)--COV--85%

St. Louis Rams (0-7)--COV--90%

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-7)--COV--90%

New England Patriots (5-2)--COV--60%

Washington Redskins (2-5)--COV--90%

Atlanta Falcons (4-2)--COV--70%

Dallas Cowboys (4-2)--COV--75%

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-7)--COV--90%

Carolina Panthers (2-4)--COV--85%

My calculator says that the Saints have a 10% chance of going undefeated, but I'm going to have to disagree. The four games they play against St. Louis, Tampa Bay, and Washington look to be nothing more than formalities because of many problems existing in each of those franchises. The two games left against the Panthers I don't see as any problem either because of Jake Delhomme's accuracy problems. The Saints cause way too many turnovers for the Panthers to pose a threat. That only leaves four games in which the Saints could fall. The Falcons and Dallas are both decent teams. Dallas is too inconsistent though for my liking. Romo doesn't usually play well against good pass defenses. The Falcons have a better chance since they are an all-around quality football team. They also play the Saints twice, but I don't think they are going to be able to perform well enough on both offense and defense to beat the Saints. That leaves the Patriots. New England has the opportunity to ruin both the Saints and Colts bids for perfect seasons. The Saints need to come out on all cylinders to beat the Pats. In my mind, if the Saints aren't playing their best football leading up to the Patriots game, they will go in as the underdogs. Anyways, the Saints may not make it past the Falcons this week, but the Patriots are the real danger. If they can beat the Patriots, I think the Saints could be the second team to bid for a 19-0 season in three years. The other, of course, was the 2007 Patriots that were upset in the Super Bowl by the New York Giants.

Yeah, i wudn't be surprised if they went undefeated. but i don't think they'll win the super bowl if they finish 16-0. chances are that someone will figure out how to beat them. they'll have to get by three dangerous teams in a row
