NZ Rugby Morally Bereft
65NZ Rugby Morally Bereft
The NZ rugby fraternity have negatively influenced NZ society for over a century. Their influences have leached into every aspect of the NZ psyche and therefore NZ society.
Paying players, arranging cushy jobs, accomodation, food and cars was rife in NZ before professionalism, not just the top players benefitted (as in All Blacks) but even provincial players and this was evident in the metropolitan areas in all senior divisions. Everyone knew how deceitful the rugby fraternity was yet the rugby culture blossomed in our wink wink society.
There have been so many rugby players, hundreds of thousands, who have worked in many jobs across our society since rugby was played here. The morals they were taught within the rugby culture was introduced into whatever occupations they filled and was ofcourse passed on to the younger generations.
NO rugby players have ever openly admitted the payments the received and no companies have ever admitted their deceitful accountancy practices.
Hiding taxable incomes, the promotion of the 'black market' practices and deceitful monetary practices stemmed from NZs rugby culture. The rugby cultural legacy in this regard is still rife today across a broad spectrum of our society. It is endemic because so many people, millions over the years, have played rugby and been influenced by its unwritten moral code. Even though rugby has turned professional and payments to players is now open, the personal trait of being deceitful and morally corrupt, is regarded as a positive, a hangover from the 'amatuer' practices of paid players and their supporters.
Yet the rugby union were harsh with rugby players who chose to play openly for money as in rugby league. Name players who went from rugby union to rugby league were those who didn't want to be receiving money for their rugby playing and having to be deceitful about it. Take Joe Karam, he had a family and didn't want to pass deceitful rugby cultural role modelling onto his kids, so he openly switched to rugby league so that he could be openly paid for it - even though he would have received far more from underhand payments if he had stuck with rugby. Players like him were honest players with morals, who were aware of their social obligations, and refused to take underhand payments while they played rugby.
The Rugby union fraternity tried to exterminate rugby league in our country. And going by all the waffle about rugby origins, by NZ rugby writers, who still perpetuate how rugby started with the lily white boys in Blimey, particularly Will Ellis, the rugby fraternity, continue to perpetuate that Anglicised origin stuff. The poms were blatant thieves who stole ideas and made them appear to be of their origin. Our leading rugby writers and commentators are of European stock and continue the eurocentric spiel.
It reminds me about the Americanisation of volleyball, it didn't start in the US as they promote. Supposedly volleyball was "invented" by William G. Morgan. The returned US serviceman stole the Indonesian/Asian forms of volleyball which are very skillful and dumbed them down by necessity to create the form of volleyball common today. Similarly with basketball which was a rip-off of the Central/South American ball playing games. Naismith tried heaps of games in his gym which nobody liked playing. Then a fellow presbytarian doing her stint in Central America sent a magazine article to him which featured an ancient get-the-ball-thru-the-hoop game......the rest is history.
Rugby writers don't seriously evaluate the true effects that rugby have on our society - besides immorality & deceitfulness, it promotes machoism, alcoholism, violence, sexism and colonialism. Rugby has also created a crippling crisis in our health sector. Tens of thousands of players have needed to have hospitalisation due to rugby induced injuries. Work absences also effect our countries production. Professionalism in rugby has been encouraged by our governments only because this shrinks rugby player base and lessens the number of injured players dependent on the state for operations and ongoing care. Via professionalism more people are encouraged to watch rugby than play it. Money gained via spectator charges then goes to fund the professional players medical expenses. In effect spectators are funding the hospitalisation and recuperation of injured professional players. The high incidences of women getting raped in NZ is related to the sexist attitudes prevalent in the rugby culture and to many of the players' gang mentality. Many deviants inhabit the ranks of rugby teams - they don't need to join the NZ police force or black power gangs to continue their anti-social behaviour or lawlessness. Their attitudes fit in neatly with the rugby culture as it would with the NZ Police force culture or the Black Power gang culture - they are all synonymous with each other in many respects. Rugby writers glorify rugby and tell lies about the games true origins and its effects on society. The legacy of the values and morality of British society are one and the same within the NZ rugby culture. It is an all consuming colonist culture which perpetuates the superiority of 'white' male values.
NZ rugby is crooked, underhand and deceitful. Thousands of players over the decades got paid under the table, but snigger-sniggered whenever they were asked to confirm or deny. The rugby culture is sick and for decades was full of wink wink administrators who condoned player payments and underhand deals. Rapes and other violence and lawnessness have all been hush-hushed over the years and continue to be minimised by rugby administrators. These aspects, because they are condoned, have continued right across our society because of the influence of the prolific numbers of rugby players and administrators. The rugby unions even let Maori suffer by being racially excluded from touring South Africa for most of the Twentieth Century. The NZ rugby union in effect supported the South African apartheid system. They used Maori players to bolster teams in NZ and help to make it the number one sports code yet because they were a 'white' board their true racist slant was clear for all to see - they agreed with the South African regime for decades that Maori were not fit to play the white South African rugby teams.
Rugby books still promote that kid Will Ellis who supposedly started rugby. Maori rugby players who have been induced by the riches of rugby are being used like puppets to promote rugby, being paid heaps to carry on the colonisation processes. Other, grounded Maori, from all over NZ have a different view on the actual origins of rugby, linked as it is to our own traditional ball playing cultures. The rugby culture of deceit, alcoholism, sexism and violence was never a part of our traditional ball games. Rugby has been used to promote British values - the rugby culture is a very sick culture based on colonist values.
Many Maori players don't know whether they are 'arthur or martha'. They have a serious identity crisis, whether to uphold Maori values or to be nice brown Britishers and to play the white ball game version to appease all those high paying adoring fans and to indulge in the decrepid rugby culture. Look at Buck Shelford, a star from the old days, who lived up to his name and took the bucks to play in South Africa with the Cavaliers to appease the white rugby administrators in NZ and South Africa and all those white rugby supporters in NZ which he looked upto. Then theres the Maori playboys who prance around the world, married with families back home...the old fellow Frank Bunce a prime example of 'wink wink' immorality as it exists within rugby family relationships.
There is an unwritten code that as long as Maori players and administrators align themselves with the rugby morals, and know their place, that they will be accomodated as good Britishers. No leading Maori players have spoken out against the negative influences of rugby on Maori culture, on Maori and the negative impact it has on their families, or on the negative role modelling impacts that the rugby culture produces on Maori youth.
The quicker Maori return to their own grassroots traditional ball games with their own values the better off we will be. Rugby has hooked in thousands of Maori over the centuries and then spat them out, changed into little promoters of colonialism. It has been left to thousands of Pakeha, not aligned with rugby values to stickup for Maori and to help them promote their own traditional sports cultures. Pakeha fought for Maori rights during the 60s and during the 1981 Springbok tour and it is their children who also continue, with Maori, to eradicate racism and colonisation here in NZ. Rugby is detrimental to a united society and will always continue to promote degradation as long as its dominant culture is allowed to continue.
Cavalier Shelford - chose big bucks over plight of Maori. He led a rebel rugby team to South Africa when a sporting boycott was in place.
Family man & role model? - yeah right :-)
Mourie refused to tour apartheid South Africa. Stuckup for all Maori with his powerful stance. A true hero.
Honest Joe Karam - moral strength
Rugby & Colonist values personified in Governor George Grey. A supreme propagandist and suppressor of Maori rights
NZ Govt./rugby union/police displayed their support for the white supremist South African apartheid regime during 1981 Springbok Tour
Maori ball games revivals are occuring at grassroots level in spite of the NZ rugby union and those Maori hopelessly socialised into the dominant rugby culture
Educated and informed youth, Maori & Pakeha, are flocking to play skilful and intellectually stimulating traditional ball games with their positive values.
Maori ball games have positive, fun & inclusive values. Primary school children in Northland enjoy the opportunities to express themselves via Ki-o-Rahi.

I left my husband after 15 thankless years of marriage. I waited for ten years while he played being the big kid, never growing up or taking responsibility for helping me bring up our children. We'd sit around endless bbqs listening to who hit who in the game and who got away with this and that without being penalised. Then the other half of the night the boys/men would be about talking themselves up blah blah blah. The kids and I were stuck in this stupid little rugby culture where the players just glorified themselves and their sport. It was limiting from a sensible family point of view.
Then my ex-husband grew too old and too injured to play again but kept his drinking binges going and incessant bullshit rugby talk. After all those yeas of conditioning himself in rugby circles, to not being responsible or contributing to effectively being a family man, with proper family time for me and our children I'd had it and we packed our bags. We're all happier now and my children have stability and certainty and a much healthier life. We're actually living now. I think only someone who has been through it all can understand so this excellent rugby page also strikes me as so open and honest.
A true and good reading and I would say soon the rugby peoples will soon have this story to be taken of this site if they can.
rugby is corrupt. But thats no exception where theres big money and a cultural agenda at stake you bet those rugby boys aren't going to let their position in our society be usurped by a tiddly little traditional Maori ball sport! Theres probably a hot line rigged up between the NZ rugby board and every sports funding agency in NZ warning them off from assisting ki-o-rahi from getting any bigger!
I'm a Northland lady who is so very thankful for the view I have read. Kia ora.
We hear now that Hone Harawira has backed the rugby union and is effectively trying to stop ki-o-rahi from being played in kura kaupapa, he is leading the high-ups group. Our kura here in Kaikohe wanted to defy Hone because our ragatahi were so keen to play but we were told to get rid of our ki-o-rahi field or we'd lose funding. Hows that our own blood turning our rangatahi off their own heritage sports.
Who can tell me why Hone is so determined to rub out ki-o-rahi from kura kaupapa? Money in the back pocket from the rugby board?
the talk is a little exaggerated about Hone not liking the intro of ki o rahi into kura. His argument is that our kids will get no where as he calls it playing olden days games. He thinks that there will be more ops for our kids to get a contract playing league or rugger and that its a bit of a waste of reources for kura up here to plow their time, effort and money into ki o rahi.
He's not really a general educative games man anyway so dont blame him about nowing how popular the sport is. Hone has put in plenty up here so I stick by him
Hi there I want to add that rugby has done very little for women. The ops are just not there as you would expect considering the amount of money invested in mens rugby. Its not fair I rek.
The anomoly with the game is also glaringly obvious when you look at players and administrators. Lots of maori and PIs playing but very few have been allowed into the administrative positions. Which goes to prove how restrictive and racist our society is.
I've played rugby for many years and each year I realise with more clarity how corrupt and racist the game and its administration is.

I too am deeply concerned about the destructive influences of rugby on our society, it is incredible to come upon this article which describes exactly and succinctly my feelings on rugby. Thankyou very much Tuwharatoa. I would like to use some of your article in my research.
