Nail Fungus

Nail Fungus

Onychomycosis, or what is more commonly known as nail fungus, is a condition that affects the nail of the toe or finger. Around 6% to 8% of the adult population are infeced with nail fungus.

Signs and symptoms

When your nails are infected with nail fungus, you will notice a change in the nail. You may notice the end of your nail changing colour. Black, tinged green, yellow.

After your nail has begun to change colour, you will notice that it starts to thicken up. At this point it might start to crumble and be brittle. You also may notice that your nail seperates from the nail bed. At this time, it can also begin to smell from debris being caught under the nail. You may even feel pain in your toes or fingertips from the thickening of the nail.

Wearing shoes can be difficult. And wearing open toed shoes can cause embarrassment.

Causes of Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is a fungal infection that is typically caused by a fungus which belongs to a group of fungi called dermatophytes. Although there are other fungi which are responsible for nail fungal infections.

Nearly all of them live in warm, dark and moist environments. Some include swimming pools, showers and even shoes that do not get constant airing.

Nail fungus normally enters your nail through tiny invisible cuts or through a small separation between your nail and nail bed. Many people experience nail fungus when they damage their nail.

* Dry your hands and feet after showing, and if they becoming wet.

* Wear appropriate socks and change them if they become wet. If you sweat, make sure your feet remain dry by powdering them.

* If you work in water, wear rubber gloves on your hands. This protects your nails.

* Always wear shoes in public places. Never walk around bare feet in public like at public pools, showers, gym and locker rooms.

* Choose your nail salon wisely. Make sure they are hygienic and they sterilize their instruments. If you are unsure, either go somewhere else, or bring your own tools

* Do not wear nail polish when you have nail fungus. The reason is that nail polish traps moisture in the nail, which will only help nail fungus to thrive.
