No words can really explain how Nana's red light district can assault all of your senses at the same time. Which is why I decided to make a visual guide about this infamous side of Bangkok's nightlife. Here you'll find tips on how to enjoy your time at Nana.

Nana is a district located between Sukhumvit road Soi 4 to Sukhumvit road Soi 15. The majority of the nightlife action takes place on the intersection of Sukhumvit Soi 4 because that's where you'll find Nana Entertainment Plaza and the Nana Hotel parking lot. Running above Sukhumvit road is the BTS Sky Train with several staircase entrances leading to the station. It's very easy to get here and all taxi drivers will know of Sukhumvit Soi 4.

You'll learn where to go, what to do and most importantly why you should stay in a guest or girl friendly hotel near Nana's red light district. Sure, Bangkok has a few other red light districts. But if you are short on time then Nana is the place to be. It's the largest red light district in my opinion with many options in terms of budget and accommodation choices.

But when you're in Bangkok especially for your first time I would hope you'd visit the many historical sights this great city has to offer. Go ahead and explore the city during the daytime and learn something you've never learned before. Try the street food or a fried cricket if you dare. Forget about the many fast food restaurants such as Mcdonald's and Burger Kings, these restaurants are for the locals.

Here's a video of how Nana red light district looks during the daytime. Not impressed? Well come on it is daytime after all and everyone has to sleep some time right. And don't let the moving traffic fool you, anytime after 1pm the roads are filled with taxis, tuk tuks an elephant or two and an army of motorbikes.

Directly acroos is the entrance of Nana Entertainment Plaza and near the end of the video is the old time favorite guest friendly Nana Hotel.

Big difference right? This video was actually taken early in the night and believe me it does get more packed starting around 11pm. But peak time is 1am to 2am when the go go bar girls get off work and start looking for an overnight customer.

In this video directly ahead is the Nana Hotel and its parking lot. That's where you can find dozens of ladies starting around 8pm. If you're not into ladyboys (I don't think I need to explain that term) be warned there many so you might want to cut down on your alcohol consumption.

Finally I save the best for last! Onwards to Nana Entertainment Plaza!

Nana Entertainment Plaza (NEP) is where men (and surprisingly today some women) from all over the world come to enjoy some of Bangkok's best go go bars. It is the epicenter of Nana's red light district and where most men come in search of bar girls after 9pm. Some of my particular favorites go go bars are Angel Witch, Rainbow 1 & 2 and Hollywood. Most of these popular go go bars have been around for a long time and remain the favorites of frequent travelers to Bangkok's red light districts.

NEP's prices for drinks are a bit more expensive today. Beers go for between 70 Baht to 120 Baht depending on the establishment and type of beer you drink. A few Thai brand of beers are your cheapest choices such as Chang and Singha. Few people come here to drink hard liquor but it's still relatively expensive especially mixed drinks. Cocktails can go as high as 150 Baht.

Besides bar girls NEP also has a popular ladyboy seen. Obsessions, Casanova and Temptations are the 3 ladyboy go go bars and a have a large popular following. So if you are into that scene then you'll be happy to know you can find them in NEP. A lot of them. If you're not into the ladyboy scene then aren't you glad you read this.

Here's a quick run down of how things work in a go go bar in Bangkok so pay attention.

Once you find a go go bar that interest you, you have two choices. 1) You can take a seat and order a beer. 2) Or you can walk around and inspect the ladies for a few minutes - and I mean a few minutes. The mamasans (managers who usually wear colorful suit jackets) or waitresses will only allow you to stay in their establishment for a few minutes if you don't plan on taking a seat and ordering a drink.

Once you take a seat and order your drink a waitress or mamasan may start asking you to choose a lady. Don't let them rush. Matter of fact as long as you have a beer in your hand you can technically lounge in the go go bar for quite awhile. You are free to leave whenever you wish so don't get pressured to take a bar girl out.

All the pretty and popular bar girls are placed at the front stage where the lights are the brightest. This way they can lure potential customers walking past the door. Yes all the uglier ones are relegated to the back so the best places to sit and sip your beer is in the front.

If a particular bar girl catches your fancy then just call for the mamasan or even the waitress. There's a pin with a number usually attached to the bar girls bikini. Once she sits with you it's customary to buy her a lady drink. In most instances a lady drink is a watered down Coca Cola that will cost you around 35 Baht and some places even more, so check the price before you enter a go go bar. The bar girl gets a commission for it and in any case she'll never finish it as she probably drank a few already with other customers.

I usually pay a visit to NEP between 9pm - 10pm and it's for a good reason. Because that's the time when the go go bars start filling in with more customers. Trust me. You don't want to be the only customer in any go go bar. Especially if you are a first timer. Go go bars want you to spend money. If you are one of the few customers in the go go bar then what will happen is a bunch of bar girls and mamasans will focus their money grubbing hands on your wallet. Before you know it you're pressured into bar fining a one or two bar girl.

What is a "Bar Fine"? A bar fine is a fee you pay to the go go bar establisment for taking the bar girl either to a short time hotel or back to your room. If your hotel is not near NEP then your only option is to take her to a short time hotel. There are two located on the 3rd level of NEP. Short time hotels charge 300 Baht for a 1 hour use of their rooms. They're relatively clean with a shower stall. Make sure you buy condoms beforehand. Short time hotels do sell them but of course are more expensive than a 7-Eleven.

However, if you are staying in a bar girl friendly hotel near NEP then you won't need a short time room. Since your hotel is nearby NEP she can go straight to your hotel. You've just saved yourself from paying 300 Baht. And since the hotel has a bar girl friendly policy you wouldn't need to pay a 500 Baht joiner fee as well. This is the advantage of staying at such a hotel and is the definitive reason why I always recommend booking a Bangkok hotel with no joiner fees near Nana Entertainment Plaza.

I mentioned staying away from fast food restaurants like Mcdonald's and Burger King. But ever so often I can understand that urge for a nice juicy burger. And I believe in supporting local restaurants run by hard working Thais. There's a nice little lady cooking some of the best burgers in Bangkok for a measly 70THB. Go ahead and try a burger and a beer and enjoy the sights and sounds around you.

You'll have fun in NEP but remember not all ladies in Thailand are there for your sole entertainment. It may feel like you're the king of the world when dozens of ladies grab at you and food and drink is affordable. But you should still respect the people and culture around you.
