This One is Just for the Girls!

If you are a guy, go play some video games or check out the latest action releases, because this is NOT for you! Just a quick little note about two really fun films that I have caught On Demand recently. The first is “Knocked Up.” This one stars Katherine Heigl, who plays Allison Scott, a TV reporter and Seth Rogan, who plays Ben Stone, a dead-beat, but sweetly charming unemployed pothead. Allison goes out to celebrate a promotion and ends up in a drunken one-night stand with Ben. Of course, she gets pregnant, decides to keep the baby and she and Ben, who are polar opposites, try to work it out for the baby’s sake.

This one is surprisingly sweet and SO incredibly funny. The characters are believable and very likable. Leslie Mann does a fantastic job playing Allison’s bitchy, bitter sister, who constantly nags at her husband, played by Paul Rudd. Rudd’s character delivers fantastic one-liners, such as my favorite when he tells Ben that he looks like “a cholo dressed up for Easter” when he shows up to his daughter’s birthday party dressed in shorts that are too long to be shorts, but too short to be pants, with a little button-down shirt, nicely tucked in. It is truly hilarious. Every character in this flick delivers a solidly funny performance that is worth watching.

My next choice is “Baby Mama.” My goodness, what a funny movie! What can you say about Tina Fey? Fey plays Kate, a successful single businesswoman who discovers she is infertile and hires Angie, played by Amy Poehler, who is a wild white trash girl, to be her surrogate. Fey comes across as very natural on screen and plays the typical A-type businesswoman perfectly. Greg Kinnear plays Tina Fey’s love interest and has some great lines in this picture. Steve Martin plays Kate’s crazy, “guru-esque” boss and while he has a somewhat small role, he brings his signature humor to the screen beautifully. There is a great cast in this picture overall, but I have to say, Amy Poehler really takes the cake. The scene when she goes into labor truly made me laugh out loud. Her humor borders on slapstick. She is out of control. This is simply a fun, lighthearted flick, just for the girls. Girls, send your men to the garage, and enjoy!
