National Anthem Should Be Banned From Sports
64I have said it before, and I'll say it again. The National Anthem should not be sung at sporting events. With the exception of the Olympics and the World Cup, there is simply no point to the tradition. Here's why...
National Sports (sports played within one country)
The National Anthem of any country should inspire patriotism. A sporting event has now turned into sheer entertainment for fans of each team. Yes, each team is trying to win the championship and be the best, but there is no connection between the players motives and their patriotism. A player's sole goal is a ring or trophy, and bragging rights for the following year and season. It isn't to represent the country.
Not only do the players have no real interest, but it doesn't even make sense to sing just one National Anthem! Many players across the sports industry are not even from the country they are playing in. In this country, we've got Japanese playing baseball, Czechs playing basketball, Hawaiians playing football, (yes, in the sports world, Hawaii is a different country) and don't even get me started with the soccer players! Sports are a melting pot for athletes. It doesn't seem fair that we sing the Star Spangled Banner for a team with starters from five different countries. Hockey makes an effort by singing the Canadian National Anthem and the Star Spangled Banner, but come on, lets face it...hockey and Canada are like peanut butter and jelly.
So why is it that we feel the need to have the National Anthem sung at the beginning of every basketball, hockey, baseball, etc. game? Is it to bring the crowd together and unite us all under God? One could make that argument, but I would simply point to the individuals in the stands. I haven't actually done the study, but I can say with certainty that the majority of the crowd could not care less what is going on when that song is bludgeoned to death by the latest American Idol cast off. Everyone does indeed quiet down out of respect for the tradition, but the "silence" does not interrupt the texting, the beer buying/drinking, or the relentless guys trying to impress the girls that they somehow conned into coming with them. And...for those people who happen to pretend it matters to them, pay attention to them soon before the song ends. They are completely focused with excitement for what they are really there to see, and have zero genuine interest in the National Anthem.
Perhaps there was a time, right after 9/11 when people showed some respect for the country, and the National Anthem tugged on the heart strings of the crowd, but that has long since passed. It is time to ban the National Anthem from sports! It would make more sense to have Jay-Z come out and pump up the crowd with absurd lyrics about shooting the basket, put a nail in the casket, our team has no fear, let me hear you cheer. (Obviously I am no rapper.) At least then, the fans would be strung up and ready to get their team into it from the get-go, rather than waiting for a big play to happen.
As a matter of fact, this article, proves my point about the post 9/11 sports patriotism, and how it has died out. God Bless America is not the National Anthem, but you can throw it right out of the park with the National Anthem. Because this guy had to urinate, and his only interest was in the game and not the song, he was thrown out! How utterly disgusting. It is embarrassing, that in a free country, this poor man could not exercise his right to not care about some silly song!
There is a time and a place for the National Anthem. National sporting events are not one of them.
Just listen to the crowd before she even messes up. There is nothing but chatter, and when she messes up, there is everything but compassion. Then she falls, and thats just funny.
International Sports
The Olympics - The Olympics are an absolutely perfect example of when the National Anthem of a country should be sung. Not only are athletes competing for their country, they are the bestin their country. The Olympics are a worldwide competition to figure out who's who and what's what in the world of sports. It is one of the highest honor's a person can have, to be competing in the Olympics as a representative of one nation. For that a National Anthem should be sung.
The Olympics even takes it a step further and only allows the National Anthem of the winner of each competition be performed. It is the prime example of how the National Anthem of any nation is best utilized, and you will notice the difference in audience demeanor between the Olympics and a national sporting event.
The World Cup - The most electrifying and passionate event in the world is without a doubt the World Cup. 32 teams, whittled down from hundreds, compete to claim the top spot in the world's most precious and widely played sport. With such passionate fans standing behind their countrymen, it is only appropriate that the National Anthem of both teams be honored prior to the match.
You will notice here, that the patriotism of each country, stands at the forefront of every game. Unity is prominent during the World Cup. This, my friends, is what the singing of the National Anthem is all about.
Take note of the gargantuon difference in tone, demeanor, unity, and patriotism from the previous video.

Watch the show...you expressed your interest in my other post! I'm no Communist, just a practical realist.
Only a communist or a terrorist would even suggest the idea, are you trying to tell me we should let our contry's spirit just fade away?
No, if you read the Hub, you would have a clue...clearly you don't get it.
I must be drunk.
Insane.. i am so closed minded that I refuse to read this Hub.
oops i read a bit...I may agree..with a couple points...the world cup is not a true sporting event tho.
While I'm not sure it should be banned from national events, I absolutely agree that it is much more practical in an international setting.
I didn't say national events. I said national sporting events. There is a very large difference.
Oh, I wanted to call you names, too. I'm so disappointed, but I"ll live. I am ambivalent about the national anthem. On the one hand I know the value of a people doing things - traditions - that bind them together as a people. On the other hand I think that national anthems are symbolic of nationalism - if not the same thing as patriotism, damn close - and nationalism has been the start of many wars including World War I. So my view on it is mixed.
I'm all for making sure the canadian national anthem is not sung. They're not even a real country.
hahahaha!
I can see with the wailings of has been singers singing the anthem...yes ban it! I get quite teared up when I hear the anthem, as a vet it hits home.
I just noticed that you said the World Cup is not a true sporting event!? Care to elaborate??
Wow...I think the beer mongers should shut up and be silent too...We need all the reminders we can get, there are those who love to see us fall (USA)...People who get paid so much for playing sports they love, need to know why it is possible..It is possible because of our freedom...
Shame on You...G-Ma :O) Hugs
Soccer is not a sport.
You sir or mam...are an idiot.
I know that and everyone that knows me here will agree to an extent. You sir are a genus.
You make some good points but a sporting event without the National Anthem? It would just seem weird. And the Deuchland Uberalis or however it is spelled may sound great but reminds me too much of the Nazis.
Yeah, it would seem weird without it, but give it a month and noone will even notice.
Nice observation! I guess that there should be only one anthem....some kind of an Olympic anthem that sings about all the aspects of gamesmanship and the true spirit of playing sports.
yeah you are right some places people do not give any respect
Traditions help to define our culture. We should not so hastily throw them out the window.
The only thing worth while in this post is the clip of the girl falling. Its pretty sad when you are asked to sing the national anthem and need note cards. The National anthem is a beautiful song written by Francis Scott Key while he was aboard a brittish ship watching Fort McHenry being attacked and found pride and hope in seeing our flag survive the battle and remain as a symbol of our country's unrelenting spirit. We sing it at sporting events to comemorate that moment. If not then, when woud we sing it? should we let something so profound be chucked to the wayside so we can go about our self centered lives thinking nothing of what we are apart of? caring nothing of the men before or after us? This mentality pollutes this planet.. this mentality destroys man.

Boy, they were pretty tough on you! I have to agree with HubChub as when would we sing it? Not that I think sporting events are the time and place we should show our patriotism, most of us have to admit we're pretty 'lazy' when it comes such things. But who decided playing/watching sports is a sign of patriotism? It's not like the USA invented all of the sports. And the networks don't think its worth televising, most of the time.
What I would like to see, is fines for pointing to heaven after a big play or thanking the lord for helping 'you' win. If their is a god, I would like to think he had more important things to deal with than 'you' winning the game. Talk about self-centered.
Thanks Tricia! Yeah, when we would sing it, I don't know. Maybe there should be a televised singing once a week, or maybe a televised patriotic concert once a week. People could go to it, and people could see it on TV. That way, the people who want to be patriotic can be, and for the majority of the people who fake it....well they can just ignore it!
As for the sports players...you can put them right up there with actors and musicians who thank god for winning an award. There may be a few that are truly thankful for their gifts, but for the most part...its a show.
Thanks for reading!
I like the Anthem, I like singing it, I like hearing it, and I like it a sporting events. BTW—I go to Wrigley Field fairly often and I see about half the people singing along and nearly everybody looking out at the flag. It celebrates freedom of assembly as well.
Exactly...you see HALF the people singing it, and you are sorely mistaken if you think nearly all are looking at the flag.
There are far better places to sing the National Anthem than a sporting event. It doesn't promote patriotism when it is not the reason people are there!
Thanks for the comment...i definitely appreciate you reading and joining in on the conversation!
Half ain't bad when the song is being performed for you.
Our National Anthem should have full attention from every single American when it is being sung. The fact that sports and patriotism have nothing to do with each other goes to show why there is such a lack of attention during the performance.
