National Botanical Gardens Emmarentia, Johannesburg
66This beautiful green garden jewel right in the heart of old Johannesburg I only recently discovered (after living in the city for 10 years). I spent almost one whole day walking around and I know that I have a lot more to discover.
The National Botanical Gardens are situated in Emmarentia - next to the Emmarentia Dam. These gardens were established in 1968 and plays host to a host of birdlife and plants.
The Emmarentia Dam offer people the opportunity to get some paddling and (small) sail boating done. Beware, you will have to share the dam with quite a few ducks!
Entering the National Botanical Gardens is free (parking is free as well, although you can tip the motor guards).
The Entrance to the Botanical Gardens are hidden from view by the lush green trees' shade. Once inside the Botanical Gardens you can choose a road to wander along. Either you walk along the waterfront and get followed by ducks, have a picnic under the trees or explore the inner gardens.
The waterfront route:
The brick paved pathways run parallel to the dam. (Shade is a bit scarce on this route - so take a hat and water!) Ducks line the water but are quite entertaining.
Picnicking under the trees:
If you want to feel close to nature, take your picnic blanket, picnic basket and sunscreen for a lazy afternoon under the trees. Trees have been planted in rows to divide the Botanical Garden's lawns. The trees offer ample shade for picnickers on the manicured lawns.
Dogs are allowed at the Botanical Gardens - but only in a selected area. This excludes the themed gardens but includes the waterfront area.
The gardens:
The Botanical Gardens have diverse gardens. Rose gardens, water gardens with fountains, herb garden, succulents, The Shakespeare Garden... every garden has been clearly marked and informs you of the rose/flower species that have been planted in it. You can also picnic in these gardens.
Notes:
- The Botanical Gardens are patrolled by security guards to make sure that it is safe to visit.
- There are small stalls to buy refreshments from - but not with a wide variety of goods.
- Do not attempt to drink water from the dam or swim in it. The water is still standing and might contain harmful bacteria.
- Keep your valuables out of sight - that is a general rule.
- Please refrain from littering or lighting any fires in this area.
