When the winter months arrive, the cold and flu season hits high season, usually making most people sick. Being sick inhibit your ability to lead your life. Realistically, it's not possible to avoid every germ that comes your way, but by taking a few simple, common sense steps, you can greatly reduce the possibility of your getting sick this cold and flu season.

1. Washing your hands can be one of the most effective methods of preventing illnesses! Being passed around by hand to hand contact is a common way for germs to spread. Washing your hands with hot soap and water, is a great way to eliminate those germs, which will aid in preventing you from getting sick. Also, hand sanitizing gels are highly recommended. These germ killing wonders can be contained in small, portable bottles that can be carried easily and used whenever you feel the need to sanitize your hands quickly and conveniently.

2. Even though you maintain a positive regimen of washing and sanitizing your hands, it is most advisable to keep your hands away from your face, nose and mouth.  This practice will help in disease prevention by not allowing the germs to enter your body.

3. Staying hydrated is essential in preventing illnesses as it keeps your body nourished with the nutrients it needs.  Also, keeping plenty of fluids in your body will aid in the flushing out of harmful toxins that can cause you to become sick.

4. Always avoid drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes when you feel you might be vulnerable to getting sick. People who smoke have heightened risks to getting sick than people who do not. If you are someone who smokes, it is advisable to try and quit smoking, or at least lessen your usage during cold and flu season.  Similarly, drinking alcohol will reduce your immune system and cause you to become dehydrated.  Keep drinking down as low as you can if you are sick, or might become so.

5. Getting ample rest is paramount to preventing illness. Lack of adequate sleep lowers your ability to fight germs and infection. Get a minimum of eight hours of sleep every night to keep your immune system in peak germ preventing mode.

Take advantage of these natural ways to stay healthy this cold and flu season!
