Home Remedy for Colds:

  • Dark honey. Studies show that the compound in dark honey can stop cough and colds better than the cough suppressing medicine dextromethorphan. The recommended dose is 1 tsp. to 2tsp. of dark honey every two hours. Honey is not recommended for babies under 12 months of age.
  • Chicken soup with spring onion. Soothe a Sore Throat with chicken soup with spring onion. This soup has anti-inflammatory compound that removes virus-filled mucus from the lining of the throat.
  • Ginger. A cup of hot ginger tea is a great cold and sore throat remedy. Ginger contains compounds that have been found to be active against rhinoviruses, the most common group of cold viruses. To make ginger tea just take two or three slices of ginger and place in a mug; add boiling water and infuse for 5-10 minutes. You can also boil the ginger for a stronger flavor. Add a teaspoon of dark honey if desired.

  • Garlic is not only an important seasoning in cooking but it is also powerful in fighting diseases because it contains antiviral and antibacterial compound that cleanses the system. To benefit from its medicinal properties eat several cloves of raw garlic at the first onset of symptoms. Raw garlic contains the highest antibiotic properties, cooking and drying lessen garlic medicinal properties and commercial garlic capsules do not preserve the full activity of the fresh bulb. To take raw garlic, chop it into small pieces and either mix it with cooked food or swallow it like pills.

  • Oregano herb and lemon. This combo is a very effective remedy for colds and cough because Oregano and Lemon juice has strong antiseptic, antiviral and antibacterial properties that can destroy harmful organism. To benefits from oregano herb and lemon juice pound 6 fresh oregano leaves using mortar and pestle, then pour the juice of half lemon. Strain it and drink immediately.
  • Probiotic supplement. Probiotic "friendly bacteria" supplements such as lactobacillus acidophilus produce lactic acid. It was found in the German study that those who took probiotic supplement regularly had significantly less respiratory tract infections and people who caught the flu had fewer symptoms and shorter fever duration.
  • Eucalyptus herb is a "natural antibacterial agent," and it brings relief to respiratory problems including chest congestion, bronchitis, sinusitis, sore throat and laryngitis. The aromatic oils will help stop bacterial growth and reduce the risk of getting secondary infections. To benefit just add a handful of eucalyptus leaves or a teaspoon of essential oil to boiling water and inhale the steam.
  • Thyme tea. Thyme herb contain thymol, carvacrol and flavonoids which are all beneficial for breaking up congestion, stopping coughing, calming bronchial spasms, and stimulating respiration. To benefit just gargle then swallow to disinfect the air passages, relieve coughing and stimulate the clearance of phlegm.
