Is Hair Loss Treatable in Men?

A recent study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that a product containing saw palmetto may increase hair growth in men. This small study included men 19-64 who suffered from mild to moderate hair loss. After 5 months, 60% of the men taking the supplement saw a marked improvement in hair growth compared to the initial evalutation.

Natural Hair Loss Remedies

There is no slam dunk way to prevent all forms of hair loss. This is a fact that most who are losing their hair don't want to come to terms with.  That said, there are some natural hair loss remedies that can either delay the onset of hair loss or minimize hair loss. On this page we will investigate some methods that can help those of you who are dealing with hair loss right now and want to find a way to either grow back your hair or prevent more hair loss.

General recommendations...Natural Hair Loss Remedies

It is true that we are what we eat and if you are American or eating an american diet, then chances are what you are eating is doing you more harm than good. Because of this, there are certain dietary supplements that may help with the onset of baldness and if your baldness is not due to heredity, then you may be able to reverse hair loss. Here are some recommendations:

  • Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in starch. Fruits and vegetables contain flavonoids that are antioxidants. These may provide protection to the hair follicles and actually encourage hair growth.
  • Massaging your scalp will help with circulation and may stimulate hair growth.
  • Avoid crash and fad diets that neglect food groups- Nutritional deficiencies are one of the causes of hair loss.
  • Large doses of Vitamin A can actually trigger hair loss.
  • Use Shampoos that contain biotin and silica.
  • Add soy foods like tempeh, tofu and soybeans to your diet. Soy inhibit the formation of dihydrotestosterone which is implicated in the process of hair loss.
  • Zinc is a required mineral for hair development
  • Avoid foods that deplete your body of nutrients or impair circulation.  These foods include saturated and hydrogenated fats, processed food and refined flour and sugar.
  • A good night's rest is essential for nearly all your body but is very important in the hair renewal and growth process.  Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep!

Hair Loss and Gene Therapy?

A study done at Cornell University suggests that gene therapy may one day be used to help stimulate hair growth. What they have found is that hair follicles that have been turned off can be turned back on again. This is significant because it may eventually lead to an actual cure for male pattern baldness (AGA)

Herbal Remedies for Hair Loss

There are a number of herbal remedies that appear to work well with treating hair loss. Note that if you are hereditarily predisposed to hair loss, they may not be effective treatments.

  1. Saw Palmetto- This herb has been historically used by herbalists for hair loss in both men and women. As shown above, recent research has showed some promising results.
  2. MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) This contains sulfur which will help promote hair development.
  3. Silica- Just like MSM, this mineral helps foster hair development. Horsetail is a good source of silica
  4. Biotin helps promote hair and scalp health- Some believe that it can even prevent hair loss although the jury is still out. Biotin can be found in nuts, brewer's yeast, and oats.
  5. Essential Fatty acids will help protect the hair and improves the texture of the hair.
  6. Tea Tree Oil will help combat the bacteria and mites found on your head that may cause hair loss.
