Natural Nutrition

The body is designed to acquire nutrition from food - in it's natural unadulterated form. Chemical vitamins (the majority of vitamins on store shelves) are not a natural form. The human body cannot utilize these nutrients as effectively as food based (natural) vitamins. These chemical based nutrients can sometimes be detrimental to the human body and bodily systems.

Natural nutritional supplements contain co-factors (as found in nature) along with the vitamins that assist utilization and also have their own functions. Aside from vitamins and minerals (which also must be food based - can you absorb a rock?) - there are enzymes, phytochemicals, EFA's - Essential Fatty Acids and other required nutritional factors that are essential for good health.

Our farmland soils are devoid of trace minerals (84 trace minerals) required for good health. If the soil is lacking, so is our food. Sure, chemical fertilizers (NPK - Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) will grow plants, but if the trace minerals required for health are missing in the soil, then it is missing in our food.

Nutrients other than vitamins and minerals are also missing from our "modern" diet. Omega 3 fatty acids for one, are missing from most of todays foods. Certain fish(Salmon...), flax seed, Salba or Chia seeds (they are the same), grass fed animals (not grain fed) are some of the sources available. It is difficult to attain beneficial amounts of Omega 3's through diet alone. Supplementation of omega 3's is necessary. Cod liver oil or fish oil or flax or chia seeds are good sources.

Most of our food is processed (comes in a box, bag or can). The processing of our foods remove even more nutrients and kills the beneficial enzymes. Toxic chemical dyes, preservatives, artificial sweeteners and much more are added to processed foods. Many of these additives are known carcinogens (cause cancer), affect blood sugar levels, are neurotoxins, excitotoxins and the list of bad effects goes on and on and on.

Two of the worst toxic offenders in our diet is MSG and Aspartame. MSG is added as a flavor enhancer and is addictive as well as causing over eating. Aspartame is an artificial sweetner with neuro toxic effects. Just Google aspartame and see how many unfavorable testimonials come up. The effects are too numerous to mention here.

Environmental Toxins

*According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 70,000 chemicals are used commercially in the United States, and 65,000 of those 70,000 are potentially hazardous to our health.

*According to the Environmental Defense Group, more than 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals are released into the environment each year-72 million pounds of which are known carcinogens. They're everywhere, in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat.

*According to the 2005 report from the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) Environmental Health Laboratory, there are 148 chemicals (38 of which have never been measured previously in the U.S. population), currently found in the blood and/or urine of Americans.

*Additional tests at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York on the blood and urine of adult Americans have found a total of 167 compounds, with an average of 91 in each person. Of these 167 compounds, 76 are known to cause cancer, 94 are toxic to the nervous system. 82 effect the lungs, 86 effect hormones, and 79 cause birth defects.

*The Red Cross, in cooperation with the Environmental Working Group, discovered a total of 287 chemicals have been found in unborn baby's blood; 180 are known to cause cancer, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects in animals. The problem: our immune systems are severely compromised by toxic exposure.

It's amazing we survive! It is no wonder diseases that were unheard of 100 to 200 years ago are major epidemics today. Between poor nutrition, toxic overload, radiation (xrays, cell phones, wifi...) and lack of exercise for most of us, our bodies are under constant assault.

Eating good foods - organic and as much raw fruits, vegetables and nuts will assist in detoxing your body. Supplementing will fill in the gaps with additional vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, phytochemicals... Avoid toxins as best you can and get some excercise - a brisk walk is good. Books are written covering these issues so I tried to condense some major points down to one web page. I hope this helps you on your journey to preserving or reclaiming your health.

There are several sources for good natural nutritional products out there. There are far more bad nutritional products out there. Do some research before you buy anything - make sure they are a natural form. It's a jungle out there, so question everything. Do not take "experts" views as fact. The Internet can be a valuable ally in you quest for knowledge.

It is almost impossible to get all the required nutrition with the "modern" lifestyle. A good supplement regime is the best alternative to healthy foods which are hard to find these days. Stress relief is also critical to good health in this hectic life we lead these days.

  • Beets - Tops Are Best

For most plants you have to wait until it is fully mature before you harvest the best parts. But that may not be true for beets.

  • That's Not Just Peanuts

Peanuts have not had a healthy image. Peanuts and beer, salted peanuts and peanut butter all suggest images that do not fit well into a healthy diet. Peanuts are high in oil and so are packed with calories

  • Vitamin D and Health

Vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin because the human skin synthesizes vitamin D when it is exposed to sunlight. When humans wore fewer clothes and were out of doors more, this was not a problem. However

  • What is the Glycemic Index?

For most people watching their fat intake is the most important part of their diet. But it may well be that the amount - and more importantly the type - of carbohydrate in the diet should be controlled.
