When setting your sights on becoming healthy, overcoming an illness or ailment through natural medicines and remedies—the very first thing to consider is the source. What is the motivation behind the source of the information—is it to share knowledge or gain profit?

A healthy dose of skepticism goes a long way especially when dealing with individuals and/or companies that make outrageous claims of having a "cure-all" or an effortless way of solving an ailment or affliction. The old adage "if it seems to good to be true, it probably is" holds true for just about anything—natural remedies having no exception.

Keeping an open mind with regard to natural remedies and medicines while having an even dose of doubt should protect your bank account as well as your health.

Herbs: The Beginning of Pharmacopoeia

Our early ancestors probably did not know the exact healing properties of the food they ingested, they only knew that they felt better after they did consume them.

Herbs were the beginning of the healing compounds that were passed on through the ages in many cultures. Even today, if a particular herb is taken to alleviate or cure an ailment or affliction—it is considered a therapeutic drug.

Select High-Quality Products

  • When purchasing dried herbs they should appear fresh and clean. To keep them at their peak freshness, store them in an airtight glass container.
  • Purchase from reputable and reliable sources only. The label should describe in detail the contents as well as the scientific name of the substance. It should also list the name and address of the manufacturer as well as a lot or batch number.
  • Whenever possible, buy standardized extracts. This is one way to insure that the active ingredient is still present.
  • If you are harvesting the herb yourself, make sure that you are able to identify with certainty exactly what is being picked.
  • If you suffer from an adverse reaction of some type, report it to a health care provider or contact your local Poison Control Center immediately.

Be Wise and Cautious

  • Do not self-treat or self-diagnose a serious problem or medical condition.
  • Do not self-adjust prescription medications or make substitutions on your own behalf.
  • Young children, pregnant or nursing women should not take most natural medicines. Young children's bodies are not fully developed and thier livers are incapable of detoxifying many substances.
  • More is NOT better and can potentially be hazardous to your health. Do not become over zealous in an attempt to rid yourself of an ailment by taking more than the recommended amounts of any herb or medicine.
  • Consult a health care provider before taking any supplement, especially if you take prescription medications. Some supplements have adverse or amplified results when combining them with some pharmaceuticals.
  • Do not ignore adverse reactions to a new substance. Stop taking a natural remedy immediately if it causes any type of negative reaction whatsoever and seek treatment from your doctor.
