Snoring is a common problem to everyone of us. But your snoring might affect your life more than you think. Do you know what goes to your partner's mind everytime you snore? Can you imagine couples breaking up because one cannot stand the other snoring every night?

Snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures caused by a narrowing of your airway, either from poor sleep posture or abnormalities of the soft tissues in your throat. The irregular airflow is due to a blockage and generally due to one of the following:

  1. Throat weakness resulting the throat to close during sleep
  2. Mispositioned jaw, usually caused by muscle tension
  3. Fat in and around the throat
  4. Obstruction in the nasal passageway

Generally, cure for snoring revolves around clearing the blockage in the breathing passage. By learning the causes and treatment for snoring, you can improve your health, your relationships, and, of course, your sleep

Here are some tips on self-cures of snoring:

•1. Lose weight, stop smoking

Losing weight results to reduction of the fatty tissue in your airway and can significantly develop your ability to breathe freely when you sleep. Quitting smoking or reducing exposure to second hand smoke can help imrove in the decrease in the noise and intensity of snoring.

•2. Improve your sleep posture

Sleeping on the side prevents the tongue from blocking the throat.

•3. Elevate your head.

Try sleeping without a pillow; pillows can block your airway by bending your neck. An even better solution is to elevate the head of your bed four inches, which may make breathing easier and encourage your tongue and jaw to move forward. Elevating the entire head of the bed is better than using a pillow, which can crimp the neck and contribute to snoring.

•4. Avoid certain foods, alcohol, and sedatives before bed

Alcohol will relax the muscles in your airways, which can worsen snoring.

Avoid high-fat dairy milk products or soy milk products before sleeping.

•5. Clear your nasal passages

Stuffy nose makes inhalation difficult, which sequentially creates a vacuum in your throat, and results to noisy breathing

If your own efforts to stop snoring do not work, visit your physician or an expert in otolaryngology (ENT, or ear, nose, and throat doctor). Or you will need to consult a dentist specializing in these devices if you prefer to try a dental appliance for your snoring.

•1. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

•2. Dental appliances, oral devices, and lower jaw positioners

•3. Surgery
