Natural Remedies for Diarrhea
72
Diarrhea is loose, unformed, watery stools that is accompanied by cramping abdominal pain. Diarrhea is very common, especially in children, and adult with sensitive stomach. Once diarrhea begins, it usually takes from two to four days for the symptoms to disappear. There are quite a few medicines that treat diarrhea but many of these products have negative side effects so always choose the natural ways of treating diarrhea
Causes:
- It can be caused by bacteria in contaminated food.
- Stress that can weaken the body, which makes it susceptible to bacterial infection.
- Prescription drugs especially antibiotics and antacids, drugs deplete your body of important nutrients that can fight bacteria.
- Drinking water in foreign country. Traveler's diarrhea is the most common type, which often occurs by drinking water from an infected water supply.
Prevention: When you travel it is important to just drink to bottled water and eat plenty of yogurts to keep the colon healthy.
Natural Remedies:
- Add more fiber to your diet. Adding more bulk to your stools can give watery stools more firmness. Some people simply tend to have watery stools, and fiber is a good solution in that case.
- Take garlic in capsule form so you don't further irritate your digestive tract. Garlic has a strong antibiotic effect when a study is conducted comparing garlic and drugs in their effectiveness for killing diarrhea-causing bugs. The garlic either wins or comes out performing as well as the drugs.
- Eat white rice or white flour, because it is binding. Apples and bland cheeses also tend to be binding.
- Eat plain yogurt, the active good bacteria in yogurt help to balance the effect of the "bad" bacteria that triggered the diarrhea.
- Drink ginger ale, to prepare, add 4 tbsp of chopped ginger in 4-5 cups of boiling water, allow it to simmer for 3 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool enough. Consume the drink while it is still warm every hour until your diarrhea has subsided.
- Consume a total of 1 tsp. of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water 10minutes before every meal until the symptoms of diarrhea have subsided. If you have chronic diarrhea, this natural remedy will keep your stomach from cramping and the symptoms from appearing.
- Drink plenty of water or clear liquids such as apple juice, and tea to avoid dehydration. A common recommendation is 6 to 8 ounces of water every 2 hours when suffering from diarrhea.
- Eat bananas since they are high in potassium (which is often depleted as a result of diarrhea).
Warning: If diarrhea lasts longer than a few days (5) or are accompanied by a fever, or if there is blood, pus, or mucus in your stool, then it should be checked out by a health care professional because it can be symptoms of a more serious illness.
