Oil protects your hair from breaking, keeps your scalp in good condition, and makes your hair looks healthy and shiny. Unfortunately, when the oil gland on the scalp produces excess oil the hair becomes oily.

Causes:

  • Oil production tends to increased because of intense heat and humidity.
  • Hormonal changes and stress. In adult women, it may come with the menstrual cycle or using birth control pills.
  • Heredity. If one or both your parents had oily hair, chances are you will, too.
  • Excessive oil is a side effect of using androgenic hormones to increase body mass.
  • Too much fat in your diet. A diet of fried foods, saturated fats, meat, and dairy products triggers increased production of sebum. This results in an oily scalp and hair.

Natural Remedies:

  • Shampooing everyday is a good idea especially if it's hot and humid. Choose a clear shampoo because they tend to have fewer chemicals in them. Make sure to rinse thoroughly.
  • Shampoos with milder skin-drying ingredients like sodium laureth sulfate are recommended, because harsher shampoos may cause your sebaceous glands to produce more sebum than it normally does.
  • Lemon rinse. Squeeze the juice of two lemons into a pint of water and use it as a finishing rinse. This helps remove soap residues which tend to weigh down the hair.

  • You may also use an apple cider vinegar rinse. After showering and blotting the hair dry, apply the rinse and massage it through the hair. Leave it on for 5 minutes. Then rinse with cool water.
  • Beer can have a drying effect, and it cleans right down to your scalp, leaving your hair with a healthy shine.

Herbal Remedy:

  • Use a horsetail herb rinse. It strengthens the hair shafts and reduces oil on them.
  • Rosemary oil helps clean the scalp, where the oil is massively being produced.
  • Tea Tree oil is very useful when it comes to controlling oils in your scalp, because its main role is to strip excess oil.
  • Sage is useful in dissolving oil buildup, making it easier to remove.
  • Rinse your hair in diluted tea. Tea contains tannic acid, an astringent, which can cut the oil.

Note:

  • Avoid overbrushing your hair, because overbrushing carries additional oil from the roots into the hair.
  • Avoid conditioners. Conditioners coat the hair, something oily hair doesn't need. If you need to use conditioner apply a small amount of conditioner only to the ends if they've become dried out.
