Nose Bleed or Epistaxis means bleeding from the nose. The nasal passage is normally moist. This makes the inhaled air moist and also removes any dust or suspended matter. Whenever the nasal passage becomes dry, the nasal mucous membranes crack and bleed. Application of moisturizers inside the nose will prevent the nasal passage from becoming dry and prevent incidence of Epistaxis or Nosebleed. Nose bleeding is frightening for some patients, but it is rarely life threatening. Most Nose Bleed stops after some time. An adult of who experiences frequent nasal stuffiness and nosebleeds might have what's known as a deviated septum. This condition requires medical attention. In fact, any unexplained or very heavy bleeds need immediate medical attention.

Causes:

  • Trauma or injuries to the nose
  • Extreme dryness of the nasal passage
  • Nasal polyp
  • Going to a high altitude area.
  • High blood pressure and very hot, humid weather may also trigger nosebleed.

Natural Remedies: In the first instance, get the person to stand or sit upright, pinch the soft part of the nose firmly between forefinger and thumb for several minutes. After this the following remedies can be done to stop the nose bleeding.

  • Soak a pad of cotton in cold, or even iced water with a couple of drops of lemon oil added, and place firmly across the bridge of the nose. A more effective method is to place a small piece of this as a plug in the affected nostril. The essential oil helps to speed up clotting.
  • Another option is an infusion of Yarrow. When cool, soak a piece of cotton or soft cloth in the infusion and place on the soft part of the nose. Hold firmly in place.
  • Drink cool water, this alone may stop many nosebleeds.
  • It is also advisable to drink cranberry juice, pomegranate juice, or a half-and-half mixture of the two to prevent and stop nose bleeding.

Homeopathic remedies:

  • Ferrum Phos: if the cause is a minor injury.
  • Hamamelis: for profuse bleeding, with a feeling of pressure in the nose and sinus areas which is relieved by the blood loss to some extent.
  • Phosphorus: for a heavy nosebleed associated with blowing the nose violently or sneezing, especially if occurring in the evening.
